There seems to be only one district in the forest.. I'm supposed to find a white wolf and all that, where do I go?

you have to do a quest for the grand oak guy then he gives you a "key" to get past the forest barrier in the east forest. all the werewolves are in this 3rd area.

So I guess, I messed it up, because I traded the book and the helmet but not the last item he has (acorn).

When I tried it, I had no items he would trade it for. Finally he says, that he has no more questions and I bore him, end of talk. No option to trade or to do anything else other than to attack him.

I even tried to steal the item, but get only the message "nothing to steal".

What could I do to get it without fight?

Youll have to wait until you get another rogue who can bypass traps. you might be able to steal the stuff inside of his stump but only with a swift hand. Or go back a save. =\\
