Duncan is too unique of a character for Bioware to have killed him off in the first 2 hours of gameplay. He has a unique robe, unique weapons, a unique haircut and The Beard. By contrast, Riordin falls to his death in an hour of gameplay and has nothing unique to his appearance or equipment. You never see Duncan get killed and you don't find a corpse, so I'm going to assume he's alive until Bioware says otherwise.
Riordan had a very sexy voice. Had he had a full beard he may have survived that fall!

Erm, seeing as he was already having nightmares anyway, what's the point if he is alive? He was going to be dead one way or another soon--very soon.
I think he was given all that unique stuff so he could look all Obi-Wan for you. And seeing his influence on the rest of the game, it works.

However, I did find it odd that Alistair didn't mention him. Especially when you find the swords.

This. I was expecting at least a quick comment, perhaps a cutscene akin to the one you get when you give him Duncan's shield.

Frankly, narrative speaking, why didn't Alistair insist on looking for Duncan? I mean, you're fighting right where he fell.
That is metaknowledge. We know it from the cutscene, the characters have no idea where he fought, where he fell and what happened to him - they can only guess after having found his weapons. But we know from Morrigan the fallen were mostly eaten by the darkspawn and the few survivors dragged underground, so not finding Duncan's body is not really that surprising. It's finding his weapons that is, and the lack of any reaction from Alistair is a disappointment.

Perhaps it is another secret the Grey Wardens keep in order to maintain fresh recruits. They would know that most Wardens will, without question, fight to their own deaths partly because it is a common personality trait of Wardens to be so persistent and goal-oriented even in their last stand (otherwise no one would sacrifice to kill the Archdemon)..
To be captured by the Darkspawn and be turned into something you fought so hard to keep at bay (like Sophie?) would be another tragic aspect to a character already marked by suffering. My guess is that Duncan is alive. Whether they use him for good or roll him out as a boss in the Awakening expansion or DA2 remains to be seen. Of course this is all just speculation!

My thoughts are along those of Relband, he either got eaten or dragged away.

And he's the narrator! How can he be gone? He has to be out there. Maybe he'll come back as a secret party member one day in a DLC...

I dont see Duncan being dead. He's been fighting Darkspawn for a lot of years and I see him dying of the taint before being killed by them.

Narrators being killed early on is a staple of movies and RPGs. Oblivion did the same thing with the Emperor. And you don't want to die from the taint. It's better to die in battle. That's why the GW go into the Deep Roads. Seeing as you're told IG already Duncan was having the nightmares, there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have wanted to take a death blow there, seeing as he was bleeding out already when you see him.

He is Conor MacLeod of the clan MacLeod. Lmao.
Duncan is now a ghoul, which will be revealed when we meet Hespith in the deep roads under Kal Sharok. That's where they dragged him to. And we will hear an eerie chant from the darkness that will chill our blood ...
