Mass Effect 2 will not start on a Win 7 (64) box with ATI 5700 series card. I only get "failed to initialize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the Physx System Software installed".
Any help?

And this is after I had to run the Directx installer separately from disk 2 after ME2 would error on a missing directx dll

I would (re)install drivers since ATI cards can't use PhysX (this software belongs to Nvidia)..

I understand, but I have never used an nvidia card or physx software. And my ATI drivers are the latest

Hm that's weird, maybe its something with win 7 (64)? I use Win 7(32) with an HD 4870, using catalyst 9.12's with no problems. You said that now you're getting a missing directx.dll, I've had this problem awhile ago with some other games you can normally download the .dll you need off the net and it will tell you where to put it and see if it works. Just make sure to virus scan it before hand.

Okay, running the Physx install off of disk 2 fixed the issue. The game works now. But why didn't the game installer install the subcomponents, Directx and Physx? Seems to be an installer issue. And then the big question, why install Physx at all on an ATI system at all?

Because PhisX isn't limited to run on a graphic card.
If the developers wish to they can use PhisX the same way as every other physics engine (e.g. Havoc) leaving the numbercrunshing to the CPU (in fact that is how PhysX is used most of the time).
Sadly the user still has to install the PhysX drivers in that case.

In your Add/Remove programs list you should see NVIDIA PhysX. I would remove that, and re-download PhysX from the following link:

It makes no difference what video card is used, if the PhysX version is the one that runs on the CPU, and is automatically installed with the game.

The OP apparently ran into some conflict between Direct3D and PhysX.  Both of them are on the distribution media.  You have to do just as described here in the first suggestion, and install the PhysX on the DVD disk, again.  It shouldn't be necessary to uninstall the broken version.

If you have a digital download, Ihave zero experience with those, although I have seen comments in the forums about Steam having a utility you can use that searches for any corrupted or missing files, and replaces them for you.

I saw on another forum and can confirm: run a registry clean up thing. I used Glary and then I used (an old, free version of) CCleaner. Both found different errors. This made mass effect 2 work for me.

It also unassociated some files i didn't want it to, so heads up on that.

Also, I run win7 x64 for games. I wonder if everyone with this problem is doing the same.

Just download Physx.exe from nvidia.com and install it. It should work afterwards.

http://www.nvidia.de...-driver-de.html

Thats what I did. It's kinda annoying because mass effect 2 doesnt  run Physx on ATI cards not even the CPU version of it .

Mass effect 2 just wants to make sure that you have installed it before starting the game lol what a nonsense.

It's a shame that you can't just install an older version of physx like the one in the link posted above.
Physx will not install if the version you have is newer than the one you're trying to install.

We need a patch that will allow ME2 to recognize the newer version as being adequate to run the game.

The latest nvidia driver is version 270.61 and the game says to check if your driver is up to date, the game is behind not the driver.

Oh well, another box for the shelf.

You need to pay better attention. It's been sufficiently answered already.

I know the solution was found, but I just want to point out that the problem emerged for me when I installed the ME3 demo and tried to open 2 to find the code for my custom Shep, which is when I reached the error message.

Demos are well known for having more problems than the games they are pulled out of. As creaky and full of old age symptoms as the UT3 engine actually is, PC owners should probably be happy any game made with it actually runs at all on current hardware.

I think the point is not that the demo didn't work. More that the demo introduced new problems for people who had none before? I suffered the same and now I'm trying to get ME2 to work so I can play the Arrival DLC before ME3 launch!

Edit: I've got my ME2 through Steam. What it looks like is that ME3 demo made a newer version of Physx.  So to get ME2 working again, I had to uninstall that, and then find the Physx installer in the commonapps folder.  (steamapps\\common\\mass effect 2\\redist) . That seems to have worked!  So yes, looks like ME2 is VERY picky about the version of Physx it uses.  For reference, the version in my folder was 9.09.0814.

Now to see if ME3 demo will run again since doing that >_>

Edit2: lolno.  I guess I get ALLLLLLL my ME2 out of my system before ME3 launches then! Good luck to others that have this pop up!

So yeah, Pyrosmeow is right: the ME3 demo makes it impossible to play ME2. This is an issue I'd like fixed, please.
Thanks, Pyromeow! Looks like we'll have to swap out our PhysX versions if we awnt to go back and forth between ME2 and ME3.
