Unable to install ME2, "A Data error occured." After loading 2nd DVD.
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
Intel Q9450 quad core CPU @ 2.66Ghz
4GB ram
and plenty of HDD space to install(15GB required, 37GB free)

The install from the first DVD has no issues, then after I insert and continue the install from the second DVD, I recieve an error(no code or anything) stating that the installation has failed.  Took my copy of Mass Effect 2: Collectors Edition back to the Best Buy and replaced the entired DVD set, still had the same error.  I have updated the firmware on both of my DVDRW drives, tried booting my system up with less RAM(took 2 of the 1GB sticks out) and tried installing from both DVD drives and even tried copying the DVDs to my HDD and installing from there.  Exact same issue.  I dont know what else to try but it appears that the 2nd DVD has something on it that my system dosent like, or the DVD is bad(which I doubt after trying a new set).

Any suggestions would be great!  Help me BioWare-kenobi, you my only hope!

So, I spoke with EA chat support, they gave me the option to install the game thru the EA download manager, Did that, still unable to install. This is confusing.....

Jarii246 i gat the same problem as you but after some tinkering i manage to install the game correctly and havent have any issue whatso ever, i though of making a post for this but havent have the time so heres are a couple of instruction (im at work now so im unable to verify everything).

first you are gonna need some rar file opener (eg winrar) and enought disk space to copy the dvds to the pc and install the game at the same time.

EDIT [i have tryied editing the files several times without sucess of deleting the four backslash, but they always appear, so you know, everywhere that there is four backslashes its only meant to be one ]

first put the cd-1 in the tray.
copy everything off cd-1 to a new folder.("eg a new folder in desktop")
go to the newly created folder and enter the data folder.
now put the cd-2 in the tray.
go to the data folder in the cd-2 (leave the new folder\\data open you´re gonna copy some files)
now copy every file that doesnt repeat from cd-2\\data to new folder\\data(eg you dont have to copy the autorun folder)

now you dont really need the cd´s so you can just put then out.
son as of now you have a new folder with everything from the cd-1 and some files from cd-2\\data.
so now run the setup in new folder.
follow the installer normally as usual, now is the important part
when it is installing the game you can see in the top left something like ("from data2.rar copying some files" (as i told you i cant really verify this, as im telling from my head)
the important part is the data2.rar thing as that is the file where the other files are saved.

so what you need to do is see that top left part of the installer, and see what it said before crashing becouse thats the file that is giving you problems.

what to do when you have the name of the files, you go to new folder\\data and go to a file named something like installerconfi or something the thing it ends in .cfg .
make a copy of the file (as some kind of backup as whe are gonna edit the original) ,open the original file with notepad and you´re gonna notice something like

[part 1]
data01.rar
something
something
[part 2]
movies.rar
something
something
[part 3]
english.rar
something
something
etc
(not exactly like this but similar you know why)

so what you need to do is, go to the part where the file that you noted above (the one that gave you the problem) in this case let say movie.rar is that file, and delete the content (not the part)
it now gonna look like this.

[part 1]
data01.rar
something
something
[part 2]
[part 3]
english.rar
something
something
etc

what the above thing is gonna do, is not tell the installer of that particular file that is giving you problems.

but what to do after this, the thing is (as ocurred to me) not necessary only 1 files is gonna give you problem (eg i have like 5 files giving me problems) so i have to do this process 5 times (thats without counting the ones that i did before trying this).

so you´re gonna repeat this process (not the part of copying the files) until the installer finish successfully.

when the installer has finish, you go the new folder\\\\data and open the files that you noted, in this case it was movies.rar, you notice that it has something like
BioSomething\\movies\\a lot if files
so what you need to do is go to the place that you installed mass effect (eg C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect 2)
and you are gonna notice that exact same folder as in the rar file(eg BioSomething), enter the folder, and you gonna see the exact same folder as in the rar file again (eg movies), enter that folder and copy everything from the rar files (eg movies.rar) onto the folder. its going to be something like this:
RAR FILE : BioSomething\\movies\\a lot of files
copying the alot of files, and pasting then in
C:\\Program Files\\\\Mass Effect 2\\BioSomething\\movies\\.

now i imagine you notice a pattern in the last part, becouse as i told you, there may be more than one file giving error.

you do this with every file that give you problem, after doing this you can run your game without a problem.

if i can later i´ll edit to add more clarification.

as maybe you can notice english is not my first language so any error let me know an im gonna try to fix it.

Disk 1 is a single-layer DVD, disk 2 is a dual-layer DVD.

Some DVD drives do not support dual-layer DVDs or they don't work well, that is why the install stalls at half way through the second disk.

Possible Solutions:
Replace your DVD drive with a new dual-layer DVD drive.
Get a USB dual-layer DVD drive.
Find another computer that supports dual-layer DVD reading and has DVD-RW capability. Create an ISO of disk 2, copy that ISO onto two single-layer DVDs (not easy to do but it is possible to create a spanned copy), copy and recreate the ISO on the original computer, mount the ISO on a virtual DVD drive (like Alcohol or Daemon Tools). Install from that ISO.

zBoBG i believe if that was the case then it wouldnt even read the disc at all. and i gat the same problem but i manage to instal DAO witch i believe comes in a dual layer dvd.

what i think, is that the real problem is some crappy compression, and a really bad implementation of the installer. Mainly becouse something i notice is that the files that were giving me errors, when i tried to descompress them manually raised some flags of files suposedly bieng damaged, but after retrying i manage to extract them.

the part of bad implementation is becouse if they would at least give you the option to ignore that file or at least retry it, as the majority of games do, it would have prevented all this mess.

This error has happened countless times, and the SEARCH would have been of help.  The cause isn't known to the public, and neither Bioware nor EA has been forthcoming regarding it.  My best guess is some false tracks have been included on the disk, intended to make disk copying more difficult, and those are why some DVD drives fail.

You can swaps PCs, swap drives, borrow an external DVD drive, try to copy to folders on your hard drive, to install from there, copy across your LAN (which is what I had to do), or you can make download arrangements with the EA store, and then use your hard copy's CD Key as your code to unlock a digital copy of the game.
