Ha I was thinking this exact same thing earlier today actually.

They would have to answer many questions about existence if this was explored. Did he remember anything? Was he just non-existent?

It's kind of funny, right now Shepard is the only one in the Universe who definitely holds the answer to the question of an afterlife.

And I'm actually surprised right-wing religious groups aren't complaining about this yet.

Mass effect definitely promotes athiesm

Not sure where, but I distinctly remember EDI or someoen saying something about Humans misinterpreting aliens as religious figures during the early periods of civilization.

There were no gripes about Ashley's conversation about believing in God in ME1, so I don't think this matters.

Your brain has to be alive to form memories, so they can easy sidestep any question of an afterlife by simply pointing to that fact. Any question about a soul or afterlife or anything like that doesn't even matter if your shepard and your brain can't remember it.

By him not saying anything about what he experienced when he was dead only proves that you are not conscience of any thing when you die you are just like deep sleep

Oh no, he was as "dead as dead can be" according to Jacob not long after you wake up.

Yeah, I think it was like cryogenic freezing where everything shuts down but he's still there.

Well that would be asking the player in reality what they think would happen, so it's obvious why nothing was said.

because his brain wasn't functioning, he couldn't feel anything and he wasn't concious. it's not like being in a coma, more like blacking out.

and he was definitely dead. completely dead. but apparently his brain was still intact. but still dead.

Exactly what I was saying.  Like poking a dead body in a creek dead.  Not going to remember what being dead was like if he can't remember anything haha

If one reads the near-death experience (NDE) literature, one finds that most are not willing to discuss it - and most of the experiences were difficult to put into words. However, the experience tended to be transformational - thus providing a basis for changes in class and paragon vs. renegade approach.

If you want to discuss, you should discuss that the opening scene sees Shep going into low orbit and entering the atmosphere. Not sure how much you fine fellas know about such an experience but the heat is enough to easily disintegrate him, his suit, and whatever he had for lunch. There would be absolutely nothing left, yet somehow there is. This is why we call it sci-fi.

He was comatose, even says so in the game. Jacob is hardly a medical expert.

Read the Mass Effect books for a more direct commentary on the status of (human) religion in the ME universe. Needless to say, the discovery of alien races threw most religions into turmoil.
