I don't understand why female gamers are considered this mythical thing, being that I am one (heck, my mom is one), and I see them on forums all the time. A Nielsen study said that two-thirds of online gamers are female. That's kind of significant.

Really? Last I heard we were sitting at around 40% but it might have changed and/or been looking for different types of gamers. Either way, still significant. Anyway, I'm another female ME fan.

But to the OP, is it the shooter aspects you think are more geared towards men? Or maybe the marketing?

I believe it is marketing at the moment. I am an anthropology Masters student,
been studying this phenomena for awhile now. It’s hard to gather in new
demographics when you don't advertise to them as well, only previous female
Mass Effect gamers (or friends/relatives of such) truly know the awesome
fem-shep choices

If anything, her boobs turned me off. I definately think Jack has better shape, though I don't like her tattoos.

I also think because of all those crazy loud Tali/Garrus threads they got the idea that "the wimmins love the aliens!!!" and so that is what we were handed. Kinda gross actually - I got a choice between a dinosaur, a sickly lizard, or a buff guy who is nice and all but not all that sparky.... Kaidan gets to keep his picture!!!

Hey! I liked Tali and Garrus! It's completely healthy and normal to romance fictional aliens!

...

Why are you looking at me like that?

*sigh* I like them too, but just cause I like someone doesn't mean I want to exchange bodily fluids with them, especially when their ancestors probably would have eaten mine. LOL

I liked Thane's emotional outburst, now the one-liner from my character sort of ruined the moment, but it was still sad. Love the step mum idea, cracked me up.

Right...so...loving someone who has a different physical appearance, but has every capability of connecting with you on a mental level is gross? That's a superficial statement if I've ever heard one.

It depends on your point of view. There are a lot of happy female gamers out there and there's nothing crazy about the fact that they find Garrus attractive. I find aliens more interesting any day - they're the unknown.

As a hetero guy, I'm saying Thane is where it's at! I dig the long jacket style, very Gambit!

I must be in a minority for thinking ME2 had the best LI options for girls of any previous offering. I'd resigned myself to having one male option and hoping he was decent before DA came out, and even then thought that was a fluke. Of course, I always wanted to romance Garrus in the first one (hated Kaidan), so that could have something to do with it. I think Thane is kind of gross-looking, but I might consider trying the romance for the emotional angle, which is way more important to me than abs. Speaking of abs, Jacob is way too Kaidan-ey, the generic soldier. Boring.

One thing that bugs me about this issue is companies that think the way to market to female gamers is a bubblegum pink Nintendo DS and games about bunnies. Gaaaah, ::smash::

I agree with you about the emotional angle however it wouldn't hurt for the guy to be cute. I went with Thane for this playthrough because Jacob was also too Kaiden-ey for me and Garrus...hmm I like his character so maybe next time.

I don't understand why men believe women don't play video games. I play and have lots of female friends who enjoy playing FPS and RPG's. My faves are all the Halo's, both Mass Effect's, DA, Gears 1 & 2, and Modern Warfare 2. Can't wait for the 3rd Mass Effect which I'm sure will make the list.

*helps with the smashing*

I kind of don't like threads like this. People post like all girls think the same.

As evidenced, some girls like the aliens. Others don't. Oh my god. Just like ~regular~ people.

Sorry if my not wanting to make out with the Predator offends you. LOL

I like lots of people, and am really good close friends with lots of them, but I don't want to sleep with 99% of them... and having to worry about a deadly allergic reaction to ingesting their secretions is a kinda big turn off.

You make it sound like I said dating blondes is gross.

edited to add -> While it's true that the brain is the biggest sex organ, you cannot deny that being appealing looking to each other is also important. I do not find reptile and birds appealing in that way, I also don't get the furries and the anime girls with cat ears... I like humans.

I'm not offended - just making a point. And as an omnivore that leans heavily towards the predator side, I'm not bothered by that at all.

All I'm pointing out is, if you love someone, which any sentient creature can share with another, those things aren't going to matter in the long run. Love is based off of mutual respect and admiration for who a person is, not what they look like, so calling it gross for those of us who appreciate it isn't fair.

It's just different - more difficult too, certainly, but not impossible or wrong.

@ Faerlyte - I never said it was wrong, I said I PERSONALLY found it gross, in response to someone asking what we thought of our LI choices.

I found the LIs perfectly suited to keeping me faithful. ;)

[I don't understand why women are usually overlooked as a viable market segment in gaming.  There are lots of market stats showing that a fairly significant number of women plan (statistic vary but the range seems to be 40-45% of women play videogames and not just Sims.)  I've been playing for years and I know a number of female gamers.  We play  MMORPG, RPGs and some action games (Halo).

I played ME1 (both xbox and pc) and am now in the middle of ME 2.

Female here. I'd have to say that a good portion of the ME fanbase is female, if from what I've seen on both this and the old forums is any indication. I'm sure we're outnumbered by male players by at least 2/3, but that really matters little.

Right. I don't understand why companies don't do some research and try to figure out what it is female gamers want rather than going to stereotypes or doing blanket research to figure out what women in general enjoy (which in and of itself is a stereotype), even if they aren't the type of women who enjoy video games. It's that kind of advertising that gave us those horribly patronizing commercials with America Ferrera and Carrie Underwood playing Nintendogs and how that's somehow what the female gaming experience is.

You have to admit that BioWare is definitely ahead of the game in terms of catering to its female audience. Despite the advertising, I felt -much- better about ME2 than I did about ME1. FemShep seems to have evolved a bit, seems more like a woman soldier than a female VA reading lines meant for the 'canon' ManShep.

Pnp Gamer, and Online........

And yes Bi..... AND married to a man I love very, VERY much.

And the femshep romances suck-as**, which is why I play a male-shep now..... just for Tali. Liara was just too............ blah. I've raved about why Tali enough, already, so I won't here. The NWN games are great, because I can ignore the sad romances in them, and go straight to the Multiplayer, and skip the single-player..... but I don't have that option with ME....

Which is another thread topic, also, I know I'd get flamed by on ME forums, so I'll skip on that too...

Anyway.... I'll shush now. :)

I'm female and I play ME. I just wish that Bioware made commercials for the female Shepard as well.

My Thinking is ..If we were all given the same opertuities.."spell" (male or female) then this would truly be a game that we all could call Great, It is great" but some how still lacking in true rpg fastion.

Jennifer Hale is a great voice actor - though when she finds ugdrades the yelling of "This will be useful!" that is 5 times louder than the shooting I was just doing is irksome....

She delivers lines so well better than Meer (sorry). I watch my hubby play his game, and I hear the same words, but it doesn't have the same emphasis at all.... but odd note, the CE guide has alot more pics of femShep than cannon Shep in them for the screen shots, and even uses Kaidan as the default when discussing Horizon which was surprising since I didn't see a pic of default femShep until the day before the game went out.

there actually is an interesting bit of research out there on the concept of males playing female roles within virtual worlds - in both single and multi-player platforms. One interesting report was on the fear of discovery (fear of being discovered enjoying playing a woman in a game setting, particularly in the multiplayer realm.) as for females playing males, there was no similar results
