Well, if you need a 3D engine, you could try OGRE 3D. :)

Well. Oblivion didnt have MP either, but someone made a MP code for it.

You are right, the market is always needing highly-accessible multiplayer games. There are many low-tech platforms that would be appropriate for a single programmer developing a very nice multiplayer game prototype. Make the game with placeholder art and if it is any good, then hire some contract artists to pretty it up.

why does the additional player have to also be a gray warden? Why can they not simply "be". your character doesn't actually get anything fancy from being a gray warden outside of plot anyhow, you have all the same abilities and skills and classes etc as the npcs you get in your party.

the story can still focus around the protagonist, but allow for others to "help" them along the way just like wynne, leliana etc do

it is a mistake to assume that all players automatically become and SHOULD be equal protagonists..

remember baldur's gate? one player was the protagonist.....:alien:
