Can a more experienced player give me a good comparison/revies of the two?

I just can't make up my damn mind.

Haven't tried Vanguard myself but I think people suggest you take the one that has to do with your shield.

Personally, I prefer Area Charge. Even Heavy Charge does very little damage, so it's really a matter of whether you want AoE or bullet-time. I prefer AoE. There are some fights that need as much crowd control as possible.

Myself, i went

Heavy Barrier + Heavy Charge (Time Dilation + 100 % to Shields, more shieldbonus than the AREA charge :D) + Claymore Shotgun (fire them in their faces for Headshots)

Researched all the Shotgun Upgrades for more OOMPH and Impact

With that said, i am having an EASY time on Veteran, but things are apparently different on Insane.

You will have to ask an Insane Vanguard for tips on Insane! :)

I like Heavy Charge. Makes it look so intense seeing a heavily armored krogan fly off a rail in slow motion.

Well, i find Heavy Barrier and Heavy Charge have a very good synergy! :)

Warp Ammo is also a viable choice. :)

If you want to go Heavy or AE is all up to you, i have only tried the Heavy Charge, which was my plan from the start.

Heavy charge can knock back even the toughest enemies provided they dont have shields or armor but still doesn't do much damage. The bullet time makes it easy to kill two enemies and the 100% shield recharge is nice. With area charge, I am not sure why one would want to charge into a pack of enemies. On higher difficulties, it seems unlikely to find a clustered group without shields. Area charge might be good for light mechs because charge seems to knock off arms and legs to permanently disable them. But heavy charge is better for a lone target.

Isn't the Claymore Shotgun the Krogan one? I thought only Grunt could equip it.

A wee bit spoilerish... but no, you can use it as well.
