Hi,

I see that ME2 has a 50 saves limit now (at least on my comp).
Is there any way of getting around this other than backing up the saves manually and deleting them to make room for another 50. Maybe through some .ini hack?

Or is it just my comp? I looked through the FAQ where I found something about a mistaken 11 saves limit but that was more about the Import ME1 saves config utility looking only at the first 11 ME1 saves (at least it was explained like that in the linked post).

Thanks for reading!

DJ

PS: Is Google with site: really the only way to search this forum?

I would be interested in this too. I normally save like crazy. Please no stupid console limitations on a PC game!

I would also like to be able to remove this limit. The only limit to the amount of saves on a PC should be the size of your hard drive.

I don't have the game yet, but someone else wrote here that you can simply move all but the latest savegames into another folder.

The game will then let you save again and use the appropriate numbers (if your last save was number 49 the next will be 50 and so on) till you hit the maximum folder size again.

Well I was toying with the idea of writing a guide up so more saves would be helpful to explore different outcomes.

Oh well, seems like windows explorer file management is the way to go.

Seems so.. but it is quite a hindrance for paranoid gamers with unstable systems, and a lust for exhausting dialog options.. .)

You can always manually backup some of the saves to another folder.

Here's how I did it... I took my latest save, copied it about 50 times, and placed it in the save folder. You can name accordingly by number for whether you want them to pop up on the bottom or top. So I've got about 150 saves, with all the DLC and different play throughs of making different choices all for one character. Whenever I save, I just save over one of my "repeat" saves.

And if I ever need more, I can just copy and paste more of the last save. That's what I'm planning on doing for the next DLC.

Here's a (deceptively simple) fix for this on the PC version.
Go to [System Drive]:\\Users\\ [Username]\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\ (for Win7/Vista users)
OR
[System Drive]:\\Documents and Settings\\ [Username]\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save\\ (for WinXP users)

Select your very first save and Ctrl+drag to duplicate it, then rename it from Save_0001 - Copy.pcsav to Save_0001.pcsav.bak
(This step is redundant and unnecessary, but serves to solve any unforeseeable complications)

Now, select your first save again, right-click it and select properties.

Under "Attributes" check "Read-only" and Apply.

Now whenever you want to save into a new slot, simply scroll-down to your first save and overwrite it.
Since the file is now write-protected the opperation will fail and a new perfectly usable save-file will be created instead.

The new save-file will also be numbered accordingly with a number exceeding the 51 save-cap.
Save_10001.pcsav is also an acceptable filename and will be displayed accordingly, but any new saves will be noted as 10002-onwards.
The game itself allegedly supports loading in excess of 1000 save-files without any noticeable performance-drop, but anything over 9000 will cause the API to crash :(

Happy hunting, and...

Eternally Seeking,
Neferius.
