^^ya i just picked reave for a bonus ability on my recent soldier import. i must say its pretty nice, altho i upgraded it to heavy reave, rather than 'area'. it just seems to me that its useless against shields/barriers :/
as far as adrenaline rush is concerned the ability is well deserved. maybe its a little OP, especially because of the CD after you come out. but since they took away immunity for soliers, the class is hardly stronger than choosing adept or engineer, so over-powered adrenaline rush is much deserved

skill works best with BR (my personal favorite) and 'viper' sniper rifles, with all headshots the barrier/shield will be down in record timing
. technically it works well with any weapon now that i think of it, those two are just my most used weapons

EDIT: for the big guys (spores that cast shockwave, or that floating squid that shoots the ray grrr) i always use adrenaline rush combined with whatever heavy weapon i have. usually collector beam, but any heavy weapon will suffice. the bonus damage for adrenaline rush does wonders

I do admit that it's pretty hard to die as a soldier staying behind cover and using slo-mo to line-up shots.

For me the overpowered ability is Stasis (work on everything, damaging everything when wears off, then target lays on ground defenceless... really?), then Assault Armour (enhance for all biotic/tech abilities and generates a wave of plasma. Husks which husks?), then - speaking of squaddies - Rapid Shadow Strike (Miranda removes defences and shoots twice, Kasumi kills. Repeat ad nauseam) and speaking of Shepard, Assassination cloak

Adrenaline rush and mattock is very very efficient (don't know if its op).
The thing I've noticed about that combination is that I don't think I necessarily hit any better but I make more efficient use of the clips.
