I had the same problem after the first installation. It always chrashed after my first meeting with Jacob ( I tried it 4x, always the same). The I reinstalled it and now I have random crashes but I could pass the scene with Jacob. Try to reinstall the game and backup your saves. Then try it again. Maybe you have luck and you could pass the spot after a reinstallation without any further crashes.

So I've encountered a problem where Mass effect 2 will crash or sit on a blank screen with background noise everytime after completing Thane's loyalty mission, right after closeing the report . Not sure why this happens, but if anyone has a suggestion let me know.

I finish the mission and get the report screen with the Illusive Man. When I close that screen I get the loading animation with the shuttle flying through the Citadel. When the animation has finished the screen goes black and the game crashes.
I've tried reinstalling, and I've also tested the "affinity trick" and the nomoviestartup option, but nothing has helped. When I tried the nomoviestartup it didn't crash, but it froze at the black screen and I could hear some background sound.

I've tried reinstalling the game, playing with compatibility modes etc. but nothing seems to work.
My system:
win7 64 bit
intel i7
radeon 5750 (x2 crossfire)
edit:
I solved it by running the game on a single core. It's weird since the game hasnt crashed once before this and im good 14h into the game:huh:

GeForce 9500 GT
Win XP Professional
Interl Core 2 Duo E7400
I got passed the stock boy thanks to the tip about using a single core, thank you, would never come with that myself.
The way it worked was that it lagged at bit the whole mission and the stock boy scene never came up, even when I passed. I guess my comp didn't feel like loading it, but it continued like it should have.

I've finally managed to pass the quest by running MassEffect2.exe as Administrator and setting Compatibility Mode to Vista service pack 2.
I verified this solution. It worked for me.

Kept having a similar crash but couldn't see why - eventually I downloaded the Gibbed editor and looked at the henchmen - I found that despite being on the loyalty mission I hadn't tripped the flag for 1st meeting!! ... I corrected that and the mission worked OK!!
May not be the same for you but no harm in checking that Thane's flags match the others ...
Hope it helps ...
