I finally solved my issue (well kinda). To reiterate, my problems started with random in-game crashes, then after messing around settings and whatnot I was able to play for a while without crashes. When it finally did I wasn't able to start the game at all. Not even after reinstalling the game a few times.
The culprit turned out to be corrupted save files (aarrrgghhh!!!) Removing the whole saves folder allowed the game to start. On windows 7 its in the /my documents/bioware folder. Of course now I have to start from the beginning and still deal with the original problem of random crashes... but at least I can play 10 minutes at a time.
Hope that helps someone
OMG OMG OMFG THANK YOU. I have been all over the effin' internet trying to find this thing, and I'm so thrilled to discover it's as simple as deleting the save game files. *KISSES*
