Somewhat related--this idea has been bothering me for a while now (a few weeks, maybe). I was wondering, if the Council seeks proof so badly, why don't they have the asari councilor or someone else "meld" or do what Liara did with Shepard in ME1 to access his memories/thoughts? I mean, sure there's the risk of having the asari be just as confused as they believe Shepard to be once they access his thoughts, but that is just silly and is less reasonable than the denial they currently wield. Plus, if the councilor did it, would the turian and salarian really doubt her so strongly as they do Shepard? And couldn't she transfer the memories/thoughts she receives akin to Shiala's transferral of the prothean cipher?
The only reason why I ask is because I wonder if this has been asked before now, and I'd really like to have a good reason as to why it cannot be done so I can stop thinking about it.

Good question, actually.

All that proves is that Shepard believes it, nothing more.

It reveals *how* Shepard comes to his/her conclusion. Memories would show locations visited, conversations had, etc. Children can *believe* in Santa Clause, but searching through their memories reveals nothing but what they were "told." Shepard can show what has been "experienced." That's my point.

worked hard to become the 1st human spectre and wsn't going to let the council undermine it. besides as a spectre you can do a lot more than "random renegade who could be arrested anywhere." the council also state that they still believe in you as a hero and individual, despite not believing in the reaper threat/working with cerberus, so it's not like they completely dump you (though in practicality it obviously is).

I didn't want to help them after they completely refused to get their heads out of the sand. Them reinstating you as a Spectre felt purely political to me. If you accept, they get to say "Look, we're helping humans. We assigned a Spectre to look into the missing colonies!" without actually doing anything at all. I'm hoping that backlash from doing absolutely nothing will force them to act before it's too late when the Reapers finally arrive. If not, I hope I'll get to watch them get killed by "Reapers" (actually, I'll probably do that anyway).

Assuming the Prothean vision is still in Shepard's head, it's even more than that. Judging by Liara's reaction to it, it should be easily distinguishable from ordinary memories. At the very least it should raise some serious questions about the origin of that vision.

Only reason you wouldn't take it is out of irrational anger or something (from an RP perspective, hope you don' t actually get angry lol).

Otherwise, it can only be an advantage.

That's basically why I did it. From a roleplaying perspective my mainShep just couldn't handle being told that everything he accomplished was based on a lie. F*ck the council for that, even though turning them down is ultimately detrimental.

The Council can shove it.

If I had let the original council live, I might have accepted it. But since the new council didn't even take the time to see me, I refused it. I'd rather follow myself than the council.

no changes noted, that was the last I heard from them. However I suspect something will come up in ME3.

Yeah in ME3 emails you receive will be "To: Spectre Shepard" instead of  "To: Commander Shepard".  Choices and consequences folks.

Why wouldn't you?... it's not like they want you to report or anything.... and you can threaten people on the citadel again. Stupid smug aliens... we'll show them.

I did it, just because. You never know when you might need it.

This. You may only have gotten a use out of it during the interrogation on Thane's mission, but you never know when it will come in handy in ME3. The alternative from ME1 was to have a human empire, which turned on you worse than the council ever did. No need to burn those bridges. The Council knows you're working for Cerberus, which is considered treason. The fact that they made the gesture in the first place shows they really appreciate being saved.

People keep bringing the Thane scene up, but that means absolutely NOTHING. A character that never met the Council and never was reinstated as a Spectre, can still pretend she/he is above the law.

I contemplated telling the council to shove it up their collective rear ends. In the end though I really like being a Spectre. I'll be sure to punch that turian in ME3 though.

The difference is mostly cosmetic, but it's there. We'll see in ME3 if the difference stays cosmetic.

Anyway, you'll have to be a Spectre to do the Shortest Interrogation in History. They should've made that one an achievement, lol.

Funny tho how when you renegadly tell him you are a specter and he pees in his pant and tell you straight what you want to know, and on the other hand when you paragon tell him you are a specter he is like "wtf ? what is a specter ? Hey Lawyer what does that mean ?".

Not true, it just requires enough renegade to pass the intimidate check.

IOW, it is enough that Kelham believes Shepard is a Spectre, it doesn't have to be true.

As Paragon Shep says, there's no reason to completely burn bridges with the Council if it can be avoided. They may not trust me as much or treat me with the appropriate respect, but at least I have an in with them in ME3

If you have Spectre status, when you use the Paragon conversation option in the gift shop you get a discount as a government employee instead of "This is my favorite store...".

As fun as it would be to tell the council to ****** off, why burn bridges? There is merit in pretending the council's opinion matters, even to a renegade Shepard.

I never wanted to relinquish my Spectre status in the first place, so of course I accepted it back.

An absolute crime that BioWare pissed away all the awesome potential the Spectres had in ME2.
