During the suicide mission, one of the last choices you make is whether or not to keep people behind to hold the door. Each time I've played I chose that.

So what happens if you pick the other option? Do people hoof it back to the ship and you get attacked from behind or something?

That was a strange part, because I just finished the game a few hours ago, and I took the "Let's hurry" option without leaving anyone specifically to guard the door... BUT... the rest of the team that wasn't with me STILL stand there holding the Collectors while you go on that moving platform on your way to the boss. So, basically, whatever you do chose there I think that there's going to be people holding the door, or Collector forces.

SPOILERS WARNING

...

And I don't know if that's a direct consequence of NOT holding the door (I mean the dialog option I took), but Mordin didn't make it at the end, so perhaps if you take the option to hold the door then they all survive, but in my game Mordin died there, poor guy, I liked him. Also I should have let one of my guys escort the survivors... I chose not to... and they died, but I had cleared my way to them, so that's why I chose to keep all my team with me instead, I thought that the path back to the Normandy was cleared but noooooooo... BioWare decides to spawn Collectors again if you chose to not escort them, fantastic... now I have to start a new game, haha! No biggie, it was epic.

Mordin has been a big issue with Endgame. If you completed his loyalty mission, you can send him as an escort or be on your team for the last firefight and he'll live. I think it's a bug of some sort.

You don't actually have a choice in this matter. Either you decide to hold the door and the teammates you don't bring with you do so, or you choose "Let's hurry" and the teammates you don't bring hold the door anyway.

dunno I said let's go, and everybody else took care of the door, I don't really see the point of assigning someone to the door, everybody is there, what do they do if you do?

Maybe I just misunderstood then... You're just pick HOW you give your fancy speech, not actually deciding anything.

And yeah, I did what you did the first time (sent the team back alone) and they all died. I actually just got done reloading and beating it again. This time I sent Grunt with them and everything worked perfectly.

As for Moridan... I hear he has a habbit of dying if you don't take him with you or send him back.

Hmm...I didn't do either of those things and he survived without issue. You guys upgraded his omni-tool, right?

Chose "Let's hurry", no ill effects.

Pretty much.  Apparently, holding the door is so important that it won't let you choose not to do so.

I'm pretty sure for the portion of them being left behind to guard the door is timed. You need to beat the first part of the Reaper boss quickly enough that nobody dies.

At least that's the only thing I figure it can be based on.
