I'm just finished my first play through and I've got to say... ME2 is officially my all time favorite game. The story is right up there (probally better, longer, and deeper) with ME1. The combat is much more enjoyable, especially in real time. However... I'm really kind of dissapointed with the final mission.
I talked to every squad member after every little mission. Unlocked every dialgoue.
Had loyalty from everybody.
I helped every single person that I could.
Completed every side mission.
Explored every planet.
Unlocked every weapon upgrade / ship upgrade / prototype.
Then hopped in the Omega 4 relay.
I still lost squad members. Apparently I didn't choose the "ideal" team members for each part.
I picked Tali (tech specialist) for the vents. Then was deciding on a leader for the 1st fireteam.
I factored in who has the most combat experience?
Who has had experience leading men?
Who has done impossible missions and come out alive?
Uh... Zaeed? Zaeed? and Zaeed? I chose Zaeed. Apparently, that's the wrong answer, and the correct answer is Garrus (I assume this is b/c Zaeed is a dlc character?). When Tali got wacked, I flipped ****. I've got no way to restart as I saved part way through the level, choosing restart level doesn't let you repick your teams. Great... just great. Now I have to replay the entire game... the entire same way WITH NO DIFFERENCE just to change one thing in the final 2 minutes of the game so I can transfer it in to ME 3. Good god... who though of this? I don't mind playing the game for different perspectives... but urgh. URRRRRGHHHHH. I think I'm going to cry now... I'm really not feeling scanning planets for resources.
Everything in this game absolutely rocks... except scanning for resources. It's so... so boring. So boring. Hold LT + L Thumbstick to the right + R Thumbstick to the right. Spin the globe for 10 revolutions going down 2-3 grids each time. It's mind numbing. Even with upgraded scanner.
I don't mind the suicide mission, but at least make the "restart mission" feature actually... you know... restart the mission in a future game. And please don't let the resource thing make a come back. It's just not fun. At all.
lol now you know to play the game with at least 5 seperate saves, i think i had like 15 all up.

Crew Escort : Paragon Garrus . I though he would care a lot with the survival of his crewmates
Fireteam : Jacob
Vents : Legion
Shield : Samara
Diversion team: Miranda

Not to mention he was about to put revenge over innocent people's lives in his loyalty mission :X yeaaah that totally will net the respect of the others. *sarcastic* Dont' get me wrong though, Zaeed is awesome and for a character like my Renegade he totally fits in. xD I took Miranda's suggestion and picked her as squad leader... kept Garrus in my team at all times cause I was afraid of him dying for some unexplainable reason like Mordin at the very end

It's no big deal anyway because in ME3 you will no doubt be denied access to this team, in the same way you were the team from ME1, and there'll be a load of new NPCs with cooler new stuff to use.
When I got back to the Normandy 2, there is no crew on the ship, does this mean they all died on the way back to the ship?

That really bugged me about Mass Effect 2, at some random point EDI activated the IFF test and everyone just takes and shuttle and goes somewhere. Can't I at least postpone the test when given the option? No... sigh. I have to replay it from the start too with the exact same choices just to fix that mistake. I couldn't even open the full dialogue on some party embers before I hit the Omega-4 relay - and now that Thane's dead, I have no way to hear what happened after he talked with his son on the Citadel and they started getting along. :/

So Zaeed's pretty good as a squadmate, but never as a Fireteam leader (he's effectively been a lone wolf for 20 years iirc). Miranda does seem the obvious choice (she even has a team bonus in her skillset), so let her lead the 1st team, but let Garrus take the 2nd team - both did fine.
Only regret is I forgot to equip Legion with the Widow after researching it - still did fine (incl the vents), but annoying that never got to use that weapon on the Collectors.

I didn't lose anyone with my paragon soldier. When Miranda was briefing on who to take it was who had "experience" and "leadership" to lead a team. Pretty much Zaeed was a loner merc, so that ruled him out. I used Garrus the 1st time and Miranda the second.
As for who went through the tubes I sent Legion in. After all, he is the best hacker there is.
I think if someone wasn't loyal, they'd die. Not 100% sure about that, just guessing. The other part was more of were you paying attention during the briefing? Miranda said pick someone with leadership skills and experience. Pretty much only Miranda, Jacob and Garrus fall into that catagory.
Wanna laugh? I sent Legion to the vents and Garrus as leader, and Legion died. Both loyal, all upgrades, etc etc.

The choices do not all make sense. There is no reason Samara is a bad fireteam leader, for example. No reason at all. She has more experience than everyone else combined and commands EPIC amounts of loyalty as witnessed on the Asari planet.
Your logic is flawed. Samara admits to "working alone for the last 400 years." I would have to imagine it would be difficult to lead a group after working solo for 4 centuries!
Ilium is not an Asari planet. It is, however, an Asari dominated planet, but it is not actually in Asari space. A majority of the population of Ilium are criminals in one way or another. Samara did not command any loyalty on Ilium. Any and every corrupt Asari on Ilium feared (keyword) Samara to the utmost degree. Why? As a Justicar, Samara is allowed to kill any and every criminal Asari she meets.

No one respects Zaeed as a leader, he is just a good merc. Garrus has experience leading a team and has held his own against three merc gangs. Garrus > Zaeed.
OK, I call B.S. Garrus was a poor leader who managed to get 3 RIVAL mercenary gangs to WORK TOGETHER to wipe him out, and also led his entire team to the slaughter by not knowing his team (rooting out potential traitors) and by making so many enemies so quickly on Omega.
Sorry, that is BAD leadership. He demonstrates himself to be a poor leader repeatedly in both Mass Effect games, he's too much of a hot head who risks too much to fight his perception of injustice, no matter the cost.
Once again, your logic is flawed. He did not lead his entire team to slaughter, but rather he was betrayed by a close friend. You need to remember that this is Omega...Money is power...
His whole goal on Omega was to make enemies. He wanted to take a shot at evil right at it's very roots. If this were Commander Shepard making and eradicating enemies you would have no problem at all. Most of what we do is very similar.

Easy way to postpone the IFF test, don't go for the IFF until you got the team members, upgrade and loyalty you want (other than legion obviously).
@Erakleitos
I've seen a few people reporting this which makes me believe there is
definitly another requirement to ensure the survival of the vent
runner. A lot of people believe it has something to do with the
percentage of health the runner has when they get to the end. Which
would make sense because if exhausted from the heat or circuits are
frying a bit it might cause them to muddle it up a bit. If this is true I guess the quesiton is what is the percentage of health it can't drop below? (other than the obvious 0% lol)

My femshep is a vanguard, so i used biotic charge and barrier to skip all the fights and run to the buttons (which is awesome in insanity mode ;p). The safety bar never went under 90%, still he died...

Always have plenty of saves, people.
And seriously, another person who thought of Zaaed first as a leader? Selfish Zaaed who'd sacrafice innocent people for his own goals? Really??

Wait... it was Legion + Zaeed, and not Legion + Garrus. I used Garrus on 2nd attempt with Tali (who was unloyal and died). Sorry i played until late last night and my memory is not working at 100% ;p
