My PC is leading the way anyway, so why not make her someone who can stealth in and look around, disarm a few traps, then go back to the crew and say "ok this is what we're going to do"?  It just doesn't feel right having Leliana or Zevran do it.  Even if I don't stealth into an area, to at least be able to disarm traps ahead of the warriors charging in behind me seems a better use of my PC.

It can be done and it works well.

You should go high on Dex, maybe some 30-40 Cunning for utility. You will have excellent Defence, Attack, Physical Resistance. With dual daggers the damage will be good as well.

Make sure you get Momentum, Dirty Fighting, Coup-de-Grace, Riposte, Pinpoint Strikes (Duelist), Feast of the Fallen (Assasin), Dual Striking.

Having crowd-control specced mages is very helpfull, though not strictly necessary. Essentially if you have good CC then all you need is Coup-de-Grace, as then every frozen/petrified/stunned/prone/sleeping (but will wake) enemy will suffer from backstabs from all angles.

Otherwise Dirty Fighting and Riposte are your friends - especially Dirty Fighting which is irresistable (except Indomitable). You may want to damage an enemy slightly, bring him down to 3/4 or 2/3 health and then stun to finish him with backstabs - so that Feast of the Fallen Stamina boost is activated.
When Pinpoint Strikes is not on cooldown I advise using this, as it's auto-crits from all angles. Especially against enemies immune to backstabs (golems, higher level shield warriors). I also activate Dual Striking after Pinpoint Strikes, as Pinpoint Strike autocrits overwrite the normal inability to crit with Dual Striking.
