Romance is forced, I had that problem on my first playthrough. I talked to Liara only a few times in the game, but was nice/neutral to her (unlike with Kaiden). Come Ilos and I keeping saying say no to her...

Well to cut a long story short, the romance continued into ME2 irregardless :S

Come to think of it, I think it's made it more interesting: Bioware have hinted that cheating on your love interest in the first game will have a small impact on the story in the ME3 :3 I just wonder who would win in a fight between Liara and Garrus...

A fight between the two of them In ME1 would be a close thing, I think. Two years later in ME2, Liara would be in another league to Garrus and would easily win, in my opinion. Off Topic, sorry.

If it hasn't been answered already, the way to avoid relationships in ME1 is to completely ignore the 2 possible LI on the ship. Do not talk to them. Any conversations that happen during the campaign, pick neutral responses to them.

I did a playthrough of ME1 and did not have any romantic interest. I was paragon so I was nice to them but when Liara asked for more I did the "just friends" bit and she never mentioned it again, and I was an ass to Ashley when she came to comfort me after the council hearing. No sex scene at all. However, when I imported over to ME2, lo and behold, Liara is on the Normandy at the beginning when everything is on fire and there's a picture of her on my desk. I was grooming this character to play through from ME1-3 as a perfect maxed-out Paragon, while possibly having a romance with Miranda (us skippies need to stick together) and I'm thinking that cheating on my love interest might throw a spanner in the whole "not being an ****" works. Is there a way of going into the game files to edit this because I really don't want to start again. I had completed every single side quest, every uncharted cesspit of a planet and even managed to make a tidy profit off the slot machines in Flux (lots and lots of saving and reloading).

Someone please tell me how to fix this or, failing that, how to get through ME1 without having to resort to never talking to them, constantly being a dick or nuking them.

Cheers.

Here's what I did to have no romance. I flirted with both and had "the confrontation" where you have to chose one. I chose Kaiden. Then, I left him to die on Virmire and POOF! Liara is not interested and Kaiden is dead.

Scenario 2: Choose to pick up Liara right before you go to Virmire. If you have flirted with Kaiden the entire time she will say something like "it's clear that you and Kaiden have feelings for each other and I won't stand in the way of that"... then let Kaiden die in Virmire.

Scenario 3: In Liara's second conversation, she mentions being interested in you. Just say the bottom "no" command. She ends it there. For Kaiden, also use the bottom options until he says something like "just got some wires crossed, Commander. But, I think I've gotten it straighted out." Romance over.

(not sure on this one) Scenario 4: Kaiden dead and Liara is pining for you... When she goes to comfort you say "no now, Liara"... if you are a renegade, you will completely shut her down. romance should end there... I think...

If you didn't choose those options, then it is hard to no romance without killing one of the options. However, I've never had a romance scene that I wanted to refuse (because if I don't want a romance, I followed the above scenarios). So, I have no idea if refusing sex will affect the picture frame.

Either way, it is not cheating if you move on. Your LIs in ME2 will not consider it cheating because of the time that passed. So, you are free and clear. It is not considered renegade to move on, IMO. Your former LIs have moved on as she will find out later.

That being said, some of my Shep's were loyal and some weren't. She shouldn't feel bad if a picture is on the desk, once you make your romance for another LI known, the picture will be turned down.

Sounds like a glitch.  When I just wanted to be friends and imported it into ME2, I didn't have a photo frame of anyone.  I'm not sure what I did differently from you or how to fix it.  sorry.  :(

To the OP: Did your friend try not recruiting Liara?

To not romance Ashley always give the "You are out of line!" response middle left(IIRC) to the comments about aliens on board the Normandy. This shuts down the romance and allows complete talks by male characters without any consequence to romances.

To not romance Liara, the response should be "I just want to be friends" or "I don't think of your kind like that" and that should shut it down. If it doesn't then it is a glitch.

To not romance Kaidan, do what I always do, leave his butt on Virmire.

This thread is rather old and I'm sure the original post isn't relevant anymore.
