so its been about 3 years since I last built a new desktop.. with DAO and upcoming FF14 demanding better graphics I decided to plan my next rig.. my current Nvidia 8600GTS runs DAO fine at medium settings + frame buffering (stupid memory leak though).. you guys think a Nvidia GTX260 or Radeon HD 5850 can handle DAO at full settings and maybe AAx2?

my current wishlist:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
MSI NF980-G65 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit
HIS Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) H585F1GDG Video Card
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W Power Supply
ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler

total: $836

im about one paycheck away but just wanted to check with anyone's opinions first.. the thing is that Radeon supports DX11 and has GDDR5 now.. though i would like to save a bit of money.. the GTX260 is about $120 cheaper but does having DX11/GDDR5 matter in the future? I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I'm a Nvidia fan so picking is giving me a hard time.

I would get yourself an AMD chipset motherboard if you are going for a Phenom II. In my experience they overclock much better. You are also going for an ATI gfx card so getting an AMD chipset board will allow for crossfire later. Other than that it looks good. You would obviously be better off going with an intel 900 series CPU and a decent x58 chipset motherboard but that is a serious wallet flattener. AMD has the best bang for the buck but intel still holds the performance crown.

Still, that will be a quick system. I am running a similar one but with a crappy Athlon 5050e standing in untill the 125w phenom ii 965 comes in stock here. Even with my radeon 5850 being choked by the budget CPU I can still run DAO at an average of about 35FPS max settings, 2x AA at 1920x1080.

Also, don't waste time on the gtx 260. Its MUCH slower than the 5850 and has no DX11. The 5850 outperforms the GTX285 in quite a few scenarios. The GT 300 series will probably outperform the radeon 5k series but its not out yet and if the past is any guage then it will also cost roughly 2x as much. The 5k series is the better option IMHO.

If budget is a big concern then you could look at a radeon 5770. Its faster than a 4870 (thus also the gtx260) and costs quite a bit less than the 5850. I have seen a lot of them reviewed and they don't seem bad at all for the money, DX11, GDDR5 and all the power you could need for current games. Then if you have a suitable motherboard you could add a second one (possibly even a third) later on down the road. I would avoid anything lower than the 5770 though, you want your system to last, not to wish that you had bit the bullet and spent the extra $50 two weeks down the line. Also try and keep apraised of the tech curve while you save up. Intel will be officially releasing Core i3s and new dual Core i5s low end CPUs targeted at the LGA 1156 platform (already avialable in some countries like here). In other words, you could save a little on the CPU now and then later, when you can save a little more cash, upgrade to an i7 8xx series CPU. I always route for AMD being the underdog and all but lets face it, they just can't keep up performance wise. Always ask yourself:

1. Is this system going to have to last me a while

2. Will I be able to upgrade a little here and there

3. Does the tech I am looking at have upgrade potential

4. What should I spend the most on

5. What will limit the system the most and can I upgrade that part without the need for a total upgrade later.

The last one is the most important. AMD have been using socket AM2+ and AM3 for a while now and are likely hitting some limitations on the platform by now, how long till a new socket type comes out that will make your system a generation out of date? Will there be many new CPUs on the AM3 socket before its superceded? I am fairly sure we will see a phenom ii 975 seeing as its on the rumor mill and possibly some 6 core CPUs that may run on the AM3 socket but I get the feeling that they will need a new chipset at the very least. Intel however have not so long ago released the LGA 1156 socket and only now are starting to fill the CPU lineup for it. If you are fairly sure that your system only needs to last you a year or so and you will do a total upgrade again soon thereafter then save the cash and go AMD. If its a long term investment then bite the bullet and go intel, its upgrade path looks a little better atm.

New socket is comming out in 2011, together with the Bulldozer CPU and as far as I know, AM3 will not see EOL till years after that.

I second the AMD chipset.
