So why can't there be some sort of an automated fish feeder? I can take my entire team and make it through the Collector home base and take down a human reaper with no casualties of my squad but I can't keep the fish alive. Lame.

Just talk to Kelly Chambers after they die the first time and she offers to feed them in your absence.

You actually don't need them to die, Kelly offered to feed them before I even had any...Then I bought some, Also you need to be nice to her or she won't offer.

Because that's when she first "sees the tank" and knows to offer.
