MountainPuncher is right, Thane dies no matter how many upgrades you give to the Normandy.
He's survived in both my playthroughs so far...
He means if you make him do the vent mission.
I was annoyed that picking the ****ing Scientist for the Tech job got him killed. I mean, I get why Legion is teh better choice in hindsight, but he's a BRILLIANT SCIENTIST and they re-iterate that often. I assumed he would count as an expert, but alas....oh well, it was good in the sense I felt genuine emotion when he died, it was my first playthrough, and I wasn't expecting it.
Mordin's tech field of expertise is biogenetics. Tali and Legion's tech field of expertise is engineering. The descriptions when you select them even say this. They reiterate that this is a SUICIDE mission, so you need the BEST person for the job.
Well, of course NOW I get that, didn't keep me from getting upset at the time.

I had Tali go through the vents and she got through fine, but then fumbled on the door and ate a rocket. She was loyal, and almost fully upgraded (my weapons are all 4/5), and I got through the first bit fairly quick considering difficulty was set to insanity. I wonder if the minor interactions matter more than I originally thought - we clashed a few times in conversations over the paragon thinking towards the geth. Tali and Legion seemed the only logical choices to me as the pure tech specialists, but I still didn't trust Legion fully to have him act alone.
The crew dying caught me by surprise. Not that it happened per se, but that dawdling actually changes things. I admit I was complacent given in bioware rpgs you generally have as much time as you like to run around. I don't think my paragon Shep would've actually delayed and risked the crew if they were "mostly ready" rather than "100% ready". Oh well.

on my first playthrough i had everyone loyal and sent tali in the vents - but she ate it to the face. i'm guessing that you need damage protection 5/5 for the vent person to survive no matter which one you send in.

On the whole ending subject, does anyone notice after you decide wether to blow up or save the Collector base,if you save it and when you go to that room to talk to The Illusive man the sun in the background is a bright blue, but if you save it the sun is a bright red? I found that to be very....interesting, hints for if the decision was a good one or not? anyone?
I guess it's a less obvious version of what they did at the end of ME1, based on basically Renegade or Paragon.

The first was who should go in the vents, i know tali was a good choice but i was afraid she might die. LOL so i sent legion thinking 'yeah, his a robot if anything happens we can give him some electric shocks'. i was WRONG!
All the rest we're obvious. Just read their little character profiles... and don't pay attention to what miranda or jacobs says. lol oh and i upgraded everything of the normandy. sooo i dont really know the minimum upgrades needed.

1 teammate died on my 1st attempt too. Mordin died at the end. So to rectify that situation, I reloaded my save game and sent him away to escort the kidnapped crew... it worked! Got everyone out alive. I cant recall who I brought along for my final fight though... its either Tali/Garrus or Thane/Jacob... probably didnt matter.

yeah im going to reload it and save legion.
L.Legion in the vents (WRONG! got lazy to reload it because i wanted to finish it lol)
L.Samara as Team Leader (EDIT: acutally L.Legion is okay, but i believe it was L.Samara as TL which was the problem.)
L.Garrus as Distraction Team Leader (He knows his guerilla warefare tactics)
L.Jacob as escort crew leader (field tactician)
L.Suze (as biotic barrier)
And last i had L.Thane and L.Mordin XP
I got their 'titles' from their character profiles. from memeory, eg Field Tactician etc.

The list goes like this for every one surviving.
1. All squad members loyal, and just doing their mission and getting a spiffy new outfit does not necessarily mean they are loyal, read the results of the mission, you may have done it wrong.
2. All ship, squad, and personal upgrades. You can unlock new upgrades for the ship and for individual characters by talking to them while on the Normandy, you can do one of what they offer while in conversation and the rest will appear at the normal upgrade station after that.
3. Give them a rousing speech to boost their morale.
4. Pick the person best suited for each job.
Legion/Tali = Vent
Garrus/Miranda= Fire Team leader, and the same one can do it both times if you like there is no reason to switch unless you just want to.
Samara/Jack = Biotic Shield
Escort = Anyone, Mordin or another non combat based character is a good choice, leaves you with tougher allies to hold the enemy off in the final battle and makes sure they live.
5. Time, yes, the longer you spend fighting bad guys, the more likley your team mates will die no matter how good they are at the assignment. If you are a total bad ass who flys through the missions you may even get away with inferior party members accomplishing a task, but the better they are the more time you will have to fight through the hoard's before they die.
6. Not a squad member thing, but if you want your crew to survive you have to do absolutely nothing but go immediately rescue them once they are gone, do anything else at all and people start to die.

Choosing Miranda as a LEADER is common sense.
No it's not. No one trusts her. Jack certainly doesn't. I didn't. (Even with the loyalty.)

I chose Garrus as leader both occasions. Miranda is a good 2nd choice as leader I guess(I chose to upgrade her skill to Ceberus Leader) but I would personally think Garrus is better suited for the following 3 reasons
1) Vet from ME1 ... sentimental reasons (I beat Saren with Wrex and himself in the squad)
2) Experience in leading squad (even though his last squad was decimated by a betrayal)
3) Noone in the ME2 team dislikes him (Jack hates Miranda and I dont trust her that much either being Ceberus and all)

No it's not. Garrus is common sense, and very effective. The Space-****-cheerleader being chosen for anything is not common sense.

It's not all "common sense".
Common sense says that a krogan would be tougher than a stick-girl at leading a diversionary fire squad, but nope.
Common sense is putting an ex squad-leader to leading a squad.

I had 4 characters die in my first playthrough! Garrus, Mordin, Samara, and Thane. Wow. 3 of them were loyal too.

What if how much you used them during the game plays a factor? Like the characters I used during previous missions survived, as did the romance interest (Jack), but characters who I didn't use, like Garrus, died with a rocket to the face.

Because your not suppose to put Garrus in the vents, he is a leader, his tech skills are only average, that is also one of the timed area's where the longer you take, the less chance they have to survive.
