No it's not. Garrus is common sense, and very effective. The Space-****-cheerleader being chosen for anything is not common sense.

She was the head of that entire space station, and throughout the game it's almost drilled in your head that she's a leader type. Don't go by what YOU think, go by what the GAME is saying. Common sense means listening to the game. Even her special power is Cerberus operative or Cerberus LEADER. She even says "I'm Miranda, Shepard's second in command".

She also says "this isn't a popularity contest. You need a person who can lead through experience". Then when you choose her Shepard says "She's right". It even says in her description when picking members for tasks. Seriously, anybody who didn't get the hint was either not paying attention at all, or just in denial.

Zaeed should be a good squad leader since he used to run a merc group, he lived in mine. But a GETH as a tech expert in the tunnels, I was kinda shocked when he bit the bullet in the face. I used Samara as the crew escort, Miranda to be my bubble with Garrus and Tali in tow, figuring she was a good biotic. Garrus was eaten by the lord of the flies. Jacob was the second squad leader and he turned out fine.

Overall I only lost two and had Tali and Mordin with me to fight BAMF robot. Was hoping If I lost anyone it would be Jack since she's the only one I didn't care to do loyalty for, but I was wrong. Oh well, my decisions were made. I think my situation was kinda ridiculous since I did make my decisions out of common sense, but I don't think I'd ever put the Krogan in charge of anything, lol.

Holy wow. I didn't realise all the ways people could die. XD Everyone lived in mine, but I had gone out of my way to take the... *sigh* hours needed scanning planets, earning money, and upgrading everything that could possibly be upgraded. So maybe that's why?

Yes, you are correct and it was pretty impossible to miss a hint like that. But she was the leader of a space station. I'd rather have a former leader of a Merc group for squad leadership, that's COMBAT experience. Its like in real life if you needed a squad leader for a SWAT raid in a hostage situation. Are you going to pick a former sergeant who's been combat tested, or the CEO of corporation?

Zaeed did fine on mine. But a geth not being more efficient at tech than Tali? Come on now...

Common sense says that a krogan would be tougher than a stick-girl at leading a diversionary fire squad, but nope.

"Leading" being the key word.

Krogans are not leaders. Krogans are "get ordered to kill something, then kill it dead." kinds of people.

I am about ready to give up.

Zaeed TELLS YOU that he often got his merc bands KILLED reguarly.  If you pick a bad fire team leader for the first mission the vent guy dies, if you pick a bad vent guy, the vent guy dies, your vent guy died because Zaed was in charge.
Garrus died for you because Miranda is not a strong biotic.
Jacob survived as second squad leader because he is one of the 3 that can pull it off, Garrus, Miranda and Jacob are the leader's, I usually dont list Jacob on my posts because I found his character unlikeable and I think of him as an afterthought most of the time.

To reiterate for those who still do not understand, the only person that can die on the first team split is the vent guy,  The fire team leader will never die on this part of the game that I am aware of.  However, if you choose either a poor fire team leader, poor vent guy or both, the vent guy will die.

The test of the fire team leaders survival for being a good leader is the 2nd time you pick a leader.

well apparently my ONE mistake throughout my entire first playthrough was not taking mordin with me to the final fight against the human reaper. everyone survived until the very end. I made all the right choices, everyone was loyal, i had everyone's unique upgrades as well as all squad upgrades except shotgun and submachine gun damage 5/5 (simply not enough credits at the end of the game even after doing all sidequests). somehow Mordin just magically kicked the bucket. i argue some level of random variable playing a part in the suicide mission, which just decreases with these factors but never actually gives your entire team 100% survival rate. until someone can show me the math that suggests otherwise, it's the only conclusion i can reach

You can tell by Zaeed's personality he's no leader. He even tells you stories how he led people and everybody else died while only he got out alive. He's a bounty hunter, a merc for hire, that's all, doing it for the money, he even says that. He doesn't give a crap about people's lives, you can see that from his loyalty mission. I never even considered him for leadership.

In my book this is common sense

Vent: Legion

Leader for Team 1 & 2: Miranda

Biotic: Samara

Escort: Grunt

All loyal and upgraded ship yet Tali died. Explain that to me

Did you get her loyalty 100%? How did the confrontation between Legion and Tali go? What did it say in the mission summary after her loyalty mission? Were you nice to her before going on the suicide mission?

How do I see percentage?
Confrontation went well, picked the paragon negotiation option.
No idea, but she never became exiled thanks to Sheps diplomatic skills
Nice, but I didnt romance her. However I hinted that Shep liked her but I picked Miranda in the end

Mordin would have made sense as the tech specialist, he's a genius, plus he was a salarian infiltrator. but he dies.

Since when are Krogan good at leading teams? Miranda > Grunt in terms of tactical planning.

This is why you fail

She just was dead after I defeated the Reaper hybrid. She was with the others, holding the Collectors back.

Not really a percentage, but in the mission summary, even if you get their loyalty, sometimes it still says something's bothering them or on their mind. Something to that extent. Where exactly in the mission did she die? Did you get all ship and squad upgrades?

He's a genius, but nowhere does it hint he's a genius in tech. He's brilliant in biogenetics, a biological scientist basically. You should've read the descriptions in for each character when choosing their tasks. Even Tali is the first choice when it asks you who to go into the vents, she's at the top of the list...how many times over the course of ME1 and ME2 did we hear Quarians are amazing engineers, and at tech?

She died because you sent the best guy you had available for a fire fight to escort the crew back to the ship rather then follow you for the big fire fight,  If you want every one to survive that last battle your escort needs to be either Tali or Mordin, you remove the weak fire fight guys from having any chance of being killed and leave enough big tough guys behind to protect the other, or to make sure they stay alive put them in your party for the final battle.

Not necessarily, I put Zaeed as the escort, and brought Tali and Miranda with me to the final fight. They both lived. I'm betting the speed with which you do things on the last mission affects everything.

Hmm I thought Garrus made the most sense as he had previously led a "crime-fighting" squad on Omega.

I thought about that but I didnt want to risk sending the weak ones back alone. Next time I will send Tali back and keep Mordin in the team. That should do it.
