I am very surprised no one else has posted regarding this,
as it is very noticeable, and very easily fixed.

The deadzone on the 360 controller is practically nonexistent in Mass Effect 2,
causing Shepard to "drift" at a very slow speed due to the generally slushy
nature of the 360's thumbsticks.  This mostly happens when coming out of
using the power wheel or conversation wheel--Shepard will all of the sudden
start moving in a direction you didn't ask.

This is hardly game breaking, but is very annoying,
particularly in combat where you’ll start moving for no reason.

I've tried 2 different consoles and 3 different controllers, all with this same
effect to the same exact degree.  I have
no other problem with any game with any of said controllers or consoles.  This is definitely a software problem.

What’s typical deadzone for a stick?  10-15%?
Mass Effect 2 feels like it’s 5% or less.  Just double it and everything’s probably peachy.

 Thanks in advance.

Ive noticed this too. Its getting more irritating by the day seeing shepard slowly drift forward. But I doubt bioware would fix anything.

Why would Bioware not fix it? It requires the change of ONE variable. We're talking a <1mb patch here, depending on what the overhead in an xbox live patch is.

At first I thought it was some sort of cover bug, but its true, you can drift out of cover. Really sucks on hardcore difficulty. <_<

Im one of the very rare people who actually likes to walk everywhere instead of running (more realistic), and you go from Walk to Run with a mere nanometer of motion. They could fix that along WITH the deadzone issue. =P

This is very annoying as well. It has a big impact on combat. Especially when I am in cover and my character will drift to one side. I'd love to have a fix for this.

I'm still really shocked no one else on the internet has even mentioned this. No reviews (no surprise there) and no forum postings.

The patch would take a programmer seconds to make.

Please Bioware, I'm waiting on my second playthrough for this! It's annoying as hell (and potentially deadly) for character motion to be out of the player's control even for a fraction of a second!

There's a deadzone? I thought my controller was broken again. It first happened in DA:O and I thought... 'it's broken already?'

You should'nt bother Important Bioware personnel with your petty issues! Just buy a new controller every 3 months!

This has nothing to do with the age of the controller. One of the three I used to test was less than 2 weeks old.

The (lack) of a deadzone is the issue.

Only one of my controllers has this issue (I have 6), the controller we at my lanparties all lovingly call "spazzpad". It was the first controller that came with my first 360, and it also has a load of cross-chatter between the X and B buttons which can make some games... entertaining...

Short version - I have only had this issue on (a:) one of my 4 year old pads, and (b:) the pad I got replaced under the warranty (the second pad that came with that same 360, which had this issue from day one).

If your pad displays this sort of behaviour, with drift on the sticks causing unplayable games, MS will replace it, provided it's still under warranty.

It may be that ME2 is simply tuned to a greater degree of sensitivity than some games, and so this issue is made visible by the game. I'd also suggest opening up your pad and tweaking the springs. It's worked for me in the past.

Its funny, since on the normandy he runs/walks like a zombie xD, leaning off to one side, actually kinda like Joker O.O;;

Yeah, that animation confused me, Shepard seems to have a limp - is it meant to be a leftover from being killed?

The animation issues are completely separate of the deadzone issue.

And even when the drift issue is not happening, you can practically breathe on the left stick to make Shepard move. This is far too sensitive.

I've tested it and with all my controllers bar one (The aforementioned "spazzpad") I need to move the stick at least 1mm to get shepard to move at all. Probably more like 1.5 (of the 6mm radius it has to move in on either side) So that's more like 17-25%

I'm guessing since so few people are having this problem it's just that this game happens to be sensitive enough on the sticks to highlight when your pad is starting to show signs of wear. Kind of like how certain games getting read errors can highlight developing problems with your drive months before it stops reading all the other ones.

I found the fix was to plug in a WIRED controller. For whatever reason both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 drift like crazy with my Wireless controllers. I even went so far as to go out and buy a BRAND NEW wireless controller only to find it drift. Plugged in Wired controller and the drift was completely gone.

Did you use a wired-only controller or wire up your existing wireless one?

6mm radius?  Where on Earth did you get that number?  The stick throw is much more than that.  Rememer it's not the movement radius of the bottom of the stick that matters, but the top.

And for me, it takes decidedly les than 1mm to make Shepard move.  But even 1mm is too sensative.  1.5 is closer.

And for the third time one of the controlers I've used is practically brand new (less than 2 weeks old).  ALL controllers and BOTH consoles I've tested have this issue with ME2, where NO other games have the same issue.

The two friends playing this game I chat with regularly are also having this problem, but it seems to bother them less.  One of my friends just thought it was him messing up--which is what I think is happening to everyone else.  They don't really notice it.

This is such a simple fix!  Up the deadzone please Bioware!  Then work on the more serious glitch and freezing issues.

Its a wired controller I already had. I know this doesn't help people who don't own a wired controller. Its just an interesting symptom of the problem.

Interesting. Unfortunately I do not own a wired controller to test this :(

I got this issue too and it is a really easy "fix"; just need to change the variable for the dead-zone. There wont be a patch for only this issue but hopefully included in a bigger one that fixes bigger issues.

Wow, I thought it was just my controller, but it looks like I'm not th only one with this issue.
