I've got this problem too, and it annoys the hell out of me. Popping out of cover in combat is not cool. I personally would not mind a larger dead zone or some sort of manual calibration routine.

6mm radius? Where on Earth did you get that number?
When the stick's centred, there's 6mm between the outer edge of the stick and the edges of the pad's moulding. it can move 6mm from the centre in any direction. The leverage of it on the internal parts means inside the pad it moves further, and obviously the tip of the stick moves further, but the actual degree of movement of the base of the stick is 6mm in each direction. The movement at the tip of the stick and inside the pad are both proportional to how far it moves at the actual fulcrum.
On all but one of my pads, it has to move 1mm at the closest point to the fulcrum we can measure (the aforementioned 17% of its full movement range) before shepard moves.
One recommendation I'd make based on my experience with other pads would be unscrew it and take some canned air to it. I got this bug a lot on Halo 2, kept walking off things when I wasn't even touching the stick, but after spray dusting the inside of my XBox pad it went away.
If using a wired pad fixes it, there may be a latency or other issue with your pad's wireless connection too. I'm still inclined to believe the issue is simply that ME2 is more sensitive to highlighting errors with your hardware but I'll add it to the buglist thread in the hopes someone from Bioware will comment.
Personally I don't understand why some developers don't bother with adding a controller sensitivity setting in the game options.

As far as I know, "stick movement" is always measured from the tip, as that is the actual usable distance it travels, not close to the fulcrum. This measurement is significantly more than 6mm.
Anyhow, like someone else said, hopefully this is on a buglist somewhere and will get fixed soon.
Not holding my breath, though. It seems that if a game company is a) not PC-centric
not Blizzard or c) not Valve, non-paid post-release support is awful.

Ah. See, I always find the logical place to measure is the SHORTEST point, since it's flush with he pad there. Measuring from the tip is harder to get a precise measurement.
However, measuring at the tip = 3mm of movement before shepard starts to begin inching forward for me. Still less sensitive than Halo 3 is for me. I'm really starting to think this may be an issue the game has with certain controllers, especially as we've had claims it only affects wireless pads (Though not most of mine).
Again: PREVENTION IS THE BEST CURE.
Devs need to put a stick sensitivity option in every game.

I have this problem as well. Most of the time Shepard slowly, slowly inches his way around when he should be standing still. When coming out of dialog or a cutscene he juts to the right.
It's not game breaking by any means, but it's quite annoying.

I thought my controller was broken!
Also while you're at it bioware, please PAUSE THE GAME when the controller runs out of batteries.

I try really hard to completely take my fingers off the controller sticks when coming out of the power/weapon wheel. Although not quite eliminating it, it seems to minimize my leaving cover/instant death problem quite a bit.
YES! Its tough replaying one of the long Insanity fight scenes cause the last measly guy in a huge room slowly walks up to you and kills you....all the while trying to string up the darn recharging cord. "Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" lol

That is weird...I have played over 22h and never encountered this problem.
I have the black wireless controller that comes with the new X360 elite (bought Mid 2009).

Apparently it affects many of us, but not all of us.

I want to add myself to this growing list of problems. I honestly started to think my controller was busted, but I have had not suck issues with any other games so far. I'm using a wireless controller, btw.

I've had this problem with several games not just me2
worse by far was da:o but ninja gaiden 2 and bayonetta also had it
i thought it was the pad at first too but i have tried several pads and came to the conclusion that it is a dead zone issue

Me neither.
The controls are perfectly fine as they are.
If they change them it would probaby make it harder to aim.

This is annoying for me as well. I am just about always drifting when behind cover. It doesn't do this on any other game. A fix or setting for sensitivity would be nice.

Wow. This happens to me all of the time. Thanks for posting this. I also am one of the people who thought that their controller was broken. I have applied better logic now and realize that Mass Effect 2 is the only game I've played where this has happened. I'd like a fix too.
