When I engage in battles in Afterlife, the game keeps crashing with the message:

"Mass Effect 2.exe has encountered an unexpected error."

It seems to happen when I'm holding Shift to command my allies. I can't pinpoint this as the absolute symptom, though.

After switching ME2 to run in Windowed mode, the problem seemed to have gone away. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this, and if so, is there a solution? Here is my computer's specs:

Name: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33 GHz
Physical Memory: 1.99 GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Driver Version: 196.21 (downloaded latest today)

I'm not too knowledgeable with computers, but I hope that helps. ME2 runs smoothly on the machine, so it's crashes are quite unusual.

Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem. It's intermittent and very annoying. It seems to happen when I select to cast a biotical from the playable character. If fact, it's the only time I've had it crash on me, but it's happened many times.

I see. Did running the game on windowed mode fix the issue for you? Anyone out there who has a solution? Cheers.

Hey, not sure if this is the same issue as you, but I noticed that in or out of combat, if you tactical pause the game, and try to rearrange (maybe even use) some powers while their cooling down, I get the same crash. The first time it happened I thought I might have alt tabbed or did something on accident that had to do w/ the power bar hotkeys, checked it out today and I'm 100% sure, at least for me, It's when I click or rearrange powers while theyre on cooldown while tac. pausing with the actual mouse cursor.

My game might also be crashing while I'm trying to rearrange the powers. It tends to break when I attempt to select an ability, so it's possible. Unfortunately, I'm in an area where there's no combat, and I don't have time to play the game at the moment. Perhaps I'll try it out this weekend. If we can find the pattern, hopefully Bioware can come up with a patch. Do they keep an eye on this forum?

Happens to me too, constantly. Usually while holding shift and using biotics, especially Overload or Warp for some reason.

I really hope they fix this.

Do the folks at Bioware check this forum, or do we have to report it via some other method? Hopefully they'll release a patch or something soon.

Apologies for possibly resurrecting an old thread, but I've been getting this as well on Mass Effect 2 for the PC. Pause combat, click at random things (my mouse skills are awesomely terrible), continue, pause combat again while things are recharging, click at random things again ... and crash.

It took me ages to figure out what was going on. The good news is I now have completely up-to-date drivers for everything in this PC. The bad news is that those didn't fix it.

Any ideas?

Resurrection man:
Same problem here, full detailed explanation and system specs below...

Very frustrating - seemingly random, and always happens in the heat of batttle.

I think it comes down to this (in my expierence):
Moving the powers on the hotkey bar, possibly when (or just finished) recharging. Maybe when 'moving" an assigned power to the same location, or when leaving the tactical view before releasing the mouse button.

Explanation:
I click on the powers I've placed on the hotkey area to use them (and mostly in tactical view). Sometimes it seems like I have dragged the icon off of the bar, and/or my mouse doesen't let go when I release the left-shift key to leave tactical view. I've noticed that my powers are re-arranged when reloading. I've also noticed I have a bad habit of accidentally re-arranging my powers to vacant slots. Sometims the drag-click|drop|leave cycle puts the power back down on the same one it left - that may also be the trigger.

Has happened in nearly every environment and on multiple different missions, with powers assigned to different hotkey slots. Happend to me 3 times on the boss area of the last mission at step 3 - totally killed the expierence for me.

I also thought it was a driver issue, but I am 100% up-to-date.

Possible workaround:
I have found if I are precise on the hotkey bar in clicking, releasing, then leaving tactical I do not expierence the problem

Addendum:
I have noticed a slight lag, or issue, between when the powers say they are available, and when you can actually use them. Dropping out of and going back into tactical view is enough to clear this.

Specs:

AMD Athlon x2 7750
ATi Raedon HD2900 pro
Realtek (onboard) sound.
Windows Vista Business 64-bit.

Great game everyone, hope you fix this little bug.

Mr_luga: the reason you are probably having a full crash, is WinXP doesent have isolation on Video crashes.  Vista and above do.  So if a video process dies (such as ME2) then your whole computer doesen't go down with it.

guys by default windows has what they call sticky keys.. this is acheived by holding down the shift button on the keyboard for five seconds..(which will minimize a full screen window and turn sticky keys on/off). as minimizing 32bit games sometimes causes crashes this sounds likely the cause of you guys issues... u could try disabling the sticky keys... if u do not know how to do this.. try mapping the "tactical pause" to tab key.. and see if it still does this.. lemme know if it works for u guys

Nope, nothing works. Remapping to any other key does not help. I am wondering if this happens to everyone or not. And no it is not because of your config, software or drivers. I got 3 computers running Vista 32, Win7 32 and Win 7 64bit. Crashes on all 3.

Annoying workaround is to pause and map powers to hotkeys above VERY quickly and avoid using this tactical pausing thing as much as you can. Aim using your sniper rifle and press hotkeys for powers.

But this messes gameplay very very much. No time to view the battlefield, plan tactics, no time to queue up powers. Only good thing is that game will not crash.

I had hoped Bioware would fix this problem with the 1.01 patch but they didnt. This game is awesome and i paid good money to Bioware but if they ignore problems like this, everyone will have second thoughts buying their games.

Hope Bioware notices this thread and release a fix for this thing. Any other workarounds, guys?

Tried the windowed mode (Without borders) no luck, remaped keys, no luck.

Possibly this started to happen after 1.01 patch; on my first playthrough (Wich was 1.0) I don't remember this happening...

Looks like we will have to wait some kind of fix in the next patch then, in the meantime I'm using the lower HUD, no crashes.

The issue is only caused when clicking (Or accidentally dragging) the icons on the upper bar.

Oh man, I never thought I'd be so happy to see so many people having the same issue. Just bought a new laptop with an i5 430M processor and ATI Mobility 5650, well overqualified to run it, and I get the same crash! I was FREAKING out, hoping I didn't have to RMA my laptop due to a faulty video card or system ram... At the same time I am now head desking as I read through and realize there is no fix yet... Seriously Bioware? WTH....

Tried using just the lower HUD, thought it had fixed it when the game just crashed after 5 hours. Seems like the problem is definately in the HUD though, always crashes after I open it to use a power and or line up a shot. Its really weird because the game runs flawlessly for long periods and doesn't lock up when you would think it would (Like during multiple biotic animations from squad member/enemies surrounding you, etc) just completely random, usually after over an hour of playing. I hope Bioware does a fix for this!

System Specs:
Intel Core i5 430M
4 GB DDR3 1066 system ram
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Realtek HD Audio

Software:
ATI Catalyst Control Center 10.4
DirectX 11
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

It's not necessarily related to drivers or faulty hardware.

It can be an AV protection that is messing with the game or stuff like that.

Try to turn off every kind of AV software and run the game on administrator mode.

Here's what I noticed with combat paused crashes. This is really messing up my fight with the end guy. I have Talia and Jack in my squad but fighting the end guy most of the skills on my quick bar can't be used. The only one Talia can use is her drone skill. None of mine can be except the accelerated reflexes (or whatever it's called) but it's not on my bar. So I hit shift and click and drag it, but for some reason it pulls Talias Drone skill off the lower hud instead. If I try it again the game crashes. Basically, it seems like if you try to move skills when some are on cooldown or simply unusable for your current target the game crashes.

Kinda stupid bug, if you ask me, but that's what I've been able to hammer out so far. Will try to test more as my patience allows.

I've actually noticed the displacement of the hotkeys myself, when you try to move one another one moves. You have to reload your save to correct it, seems odd. I wonder if this glitch is connected with my lock ups because I've been trying not to use the upper quick tabs and just the lower HUD and it still happens, albeit less frequently. Possibly it happens when I accidentally drag a power icon from the lower HUD? I really can't pin it down since its in the heat of combat whenever it happens...

edit: also, have been running in admin mode.. and my virus protection doesn't seem to be the problem either...  however, should I just run masseffect2.exe in admin mode? I've been running the launcher in admin mode and I'm unsure if it transfers administration to the game when it launches it or what...
