Crash during combat when running ME2 on fullscreen

"Mass Effect 2.exe has encountered an unexpected error."
It seems to happen when I'm holding Shift to command my allies. I can't pinpoint this as the absolute symptom, though.
After switching ME2 to run in Windowed mode, the problem seemed to have gone away. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this, and if so, is there a solution? Here is my computer's specs:
Name: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33 GHz
Physical Memory: 1.99 GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Driver Version: 196.21 (downloaded latest today)
I'm not too knowledgeable with computers, but I hope that helps. ME2 runs smoothly on the machine, so it's crashes are quite unusual.
Thanks for your help.

Apologies for possibly resurrecting an old thread, but I've been getting this as well on Mass Effect 2 for the PC. Pause combat, click at random things (my mouse skills are awesomely terrible), continue, pause combat again while things are recharging, click at random things again ... and crash.Shadowstride000 wrote...
Hey, not sure if this is the same issue as you, but I noticed that in or out of combat, if you tactical pause the game, and try to rearrange (maybe even use) some powers while their cooling down, I get the same crash. The first time it happened I thought I might have alt tabbed or did something on accident that had to do w/ the power bar hotkeys, checked it out today and I'm 100% sure, at least for me, It's when I click or rearrange powers while theyre on cooldown while tac. pausing with the actual mouse cursor.
It took me ages to figure out what was going on. The good news is I now have completely up-to-date drivers for everything in this PC. The bad news is that those didn't fix it.
Any ideas?

Same problem here, full detailed explanation and system specs below...
Very frustrating - seemingly random, and always happens in the heat of batttle.
I think it comes down to this (in my expierence):
Moving the powers on the hotkey bar, possibly when (or just finished) recharging. Maybe when 'moving" an assigned power to the same location, or when leaving the tactical view before releasing the mouse button.
Explanation:
I click on the powers I've placed on the hotkey area to use them (and mostly in tactical view). Sometimes it seems like I have dragged the icon off of the bar, and/or my mouse doesen't let go when I release the left-shift key to leave tactical view. I've noticed that my powers are re-arranged when reloading. I've also noticed I have a bad habit of accidentally re-arranging my powers to vacant slots. Sometims the drag-click|drop|leave cycle puts the power back down on the same one it left - that may also be the trigger.
Has happened in nearly every environment and on multiple different missions, with powers assigned to different hotkey slots. Happend to me 3 times on the boss area of the last mission at step 3 - totally killed the expierence for me.
I also thought it was a driver issue, but I am 100% up-to-date.
Possible workaround:
I have found if I are precise on the hotkey bar in clicking, releasing, then leaving tactical I do not expierence the problem
Addendum:
I have noticed a slight lag, or issue, between when the powers say they are available, and when you can actually use them. Dropping out of and going back into tactical view is enough to clear this.
Specs:
AMD Athlon x2 7750
ATi Raedon HD2900 pro
Realtek (onboard) sound.
Windows Vista Business 64-bit.
Great game everyone, hope you fix this little bug.
Mr_luga: the reason you are probably having a full crash, is WinXP doesent have isolation on Video crashes. Vista and above do. So if a video process dies (such as ME2) then your whole computer doesen't go down with it.

Annoying workaround is to pause and map powers to hotkeys above VERY quickly and avoid using this tactical pausing thing as much as you can. Aim using your sniper rifle and press hotkeys for powers.
But this messes gameplay very very much. No time to view the battlefield, plan tactics, no time to queue up powers. Only good thing is that game will not crash.
I had hoped Bioware would fix this problem with the 1.01 patch but they didnt. This game is awesome and i paid good money to Bioware but if they ignore problems like this, everyone will have second thoughts buying their games.
Hope Bioware notices this thread and release a fix for this thing. Any other workarounds, guys?

Possibly this started to happen after 1.01 patch; on my first playthrough (Wich was 1.0) I don't remember this happening...

The issue is only caused when clicking (Or accidentally dragging) the icons on the upper bar.

It can be an AV protection that is messing with the game or stuff like that.
Try to turn off every kind of AV software and run the game on administrator mode.

Kinda stupid bug, if you ask me, but that's what I've been able to hammer out so far. Will try to test more as my patience allows.

edit: also, have been running in admin mode.. and my virus protection doesn't seem to be the problem either... however, should I just run masseffect2.exe in admin mode? I've been running the launcher in admin mode and I'm unsure if it transfers administration to the game when it launches it or what...
