Mass Effect 2 Lags but why?

XP SP3
Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz
4gb RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
I thought maybe somehow the video card is spiking and the CPU stalls until the gpu catches up but I'm really not sure and don't know why the card would be having trouble.
I have an Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus that can't locate the driver in Device Manager but I dunno if that could cause a problem and I can't manage to remedy it.
Appreciate any help, please and thank you.

Are you running 64bit or 32bit?
Also, considered upgrading to Windows 7?

I have had the same issues with ME1 and now with ME2. Runs fine for a while and than slows down a lot. Sometimes in ME2 doors, terminals, other selectable things are not able to be selected. Right now I am assuming its a overheating problem, running on a laptop, because all my specs are above minimum.
I have the same issue, it happened in DA:O as well. It like slows down a lot, and after like 5-10 min, its back to normal. I don't know why it happens though. I just exit the game and restart it. >.>

I've noticed that every user that's posting in this thread with the same issue is using a nVidia video card. It almost seems like you guys might need to update your graphic drivers.

60 fps then random drops to 15 fps and no doors or conversations or other usable items can be accessed
nvidia 9800M GT
However, I have the very latest graphics drivers installed, so that is not the reason.

It just frustrating for me to play the game in this way.

Also, overclocking hardware has been known to negatively react to ME2.
A multi-core problem has also been noted, you can find the fix to this in the forums already. Changing the affinity after starting and setting it back while it's running has fixed a few problems as well.
Those would be my first suggestions. Well each person could publish the config utility hardware output and compare. Maybe there's a similarity? I don't have any slow-down issues on my Win7x64 with 3GB RAM and 9xxx series NVIDIA card with ME2. And I've had some very lengthy playtimes.

That's the topic I started, about the exact same problem, maybe something in there helps someone, or at least it helps to pool some of the info for bioware.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else having this problem purchase your game online through Steam? I notice the Steam tray applet is always running and even linked to the ME2 executable (can't kill the tray applet while the game is running). I wonder could the issue be related to this?
Anyone else have other ideas?
