After playing the game for a few minutes I begin to encounter random occasional lag spikes.  This even happens while in a dialogue sequence.  The visual chugs for a few seconds and the sound gets choppy and staticy.  The process percentage for Masseffect2.exe drops from close to max to about 60% and then gradually returns.  Nothing is hogging the extra CPU cycles.  Please let me know what I should look at to try and fix this problem.  I've tried updating drivers and turning down the graphics to no avail (Cranked down the resolution and tried turning the few random options to off).

XP SP3
Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz
4gb RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB

I thought maybe somehow the video card is spiking and the CPU stalls until the gpu catches up but I'm really not sure and don't know why the card would be having trouble.

I have an Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus that can't locate the driver in Device Manager but I dunno if that could cause a problem and I can't manage to remedy it.

Appreciate any help, please and thank you.

Bump in case someone has seen a similar issue anywhere in any game.

Virus, Firewall issues, background apps, slow fle transfer (old harddrives)

Are you running 64bit or 32bit?

Also, considered upgrading to Windows 7?

I have had the same issues with ME1 and now with ME2. Runs fine for a while and than slows down a lot. Sometimes in ME2 doors, terminals, other selectable things are not able to be selected. Right now I am assuming its a overheating problem, running on a laptop, because all my specs are above minimum.

Its not a virus or firewall issue. The hard drives are only a year or 2 old. No background app is visible in the process tree, the resources just go to random things like System/SystemTray/Explorer for a few seconds and then revert back to mass effect. I'm running 32 bit. I cannot for the life of me figure out the problem.

I have the same issue, it happened in DA:O as well.  It like slows down a lot, and after like 5-10 min, its back to normal.  I don't know why it happens though.  I just exit the game and restart it. >.>

That was exactly my problem so i proped my laptop up a little and hey presto hours of searching for a fix and all i took was shoving a peice of plastic under XD

Yeah, usually exiting and restarting the game fixes that. But it gets annoying to do this repeatedly. My laptop gets really warm, the fan on the side is really small, so I guess I just have to deal with it. Giving some thought to a cooler of some sort, not sure how good that'll be though.

I have the same problem. ME2 lags after a few minutes of playing.

I find this happens to me with Crysis; the framerate is crippled for about 5 minutes, even if I just stare at the ground, then all of a sudden it jumps to a solid 60 FPS and stays there no matter what kind of action is on-screen.

hmm. Wonder if your CPU is downclocking itself (i.e. what it does when you exit the game and are staring at the desktop). Something you could try. Get a free program such as CPU-Z. Have it propped in a corner of the screen-- run ME2 windowed and see if your CPU stays at max speed the entire time. Could also make sure your GPU is doing the same, using the same.

Cheers

Chan

The CPU doesn't change speed based on watching CPU-Z. I didn't see a way to monitor the GPU using that tool. The computer behaves like another process hogs CPU time but instead mass effect 2 just relinquishes some cycles that aren't needed anywhere else.

I have the same problem. It runs fine for about 20 minutes, then begins the lag spikes. Either my laptop just can't handle the game or it's an overheating problem. Or something.

same here, every few minutes the game lags mostly twice in a row for abour 3 or 4 seconds, then it runs well for a few minutes. pretty strange.

last time i had a problem like this was on win95 with a borked network configuration, no idea what the problem could be now :P

i got a single core 2,9GHz, nvidia gtx260, winXP, newest drivers

I'm having very similar issues with the game, but my specs are way above the req, im running win7 8 gigs of ramm, asus 250 1gig, and a quadcore 2.5gh, The game seems to run fine but about every 2 minutes it get horrible lag spikes that basically freezes momentarily. If you have any ideas on how to resolve this issue i would love to know

Same Thing is happening to me. First I downloaded the game from Direct2drive.com and noticed the game would get really choppy every 3 minutes for at least 40 seconds. Pretty much unplayable. After uninstalling and reinstalling the game 3 times and getting the same problem I decided to purchase an actual ME2 DvDrom thinking that it was a problem with Direct2drive's game file. Well I get home and install it and everything seems good and then all of a sudden I start getting the same choppy framerate every 3 minutes again for and it lasts around 35 seconds before It smooths out again only to get choppy again after a few minutes. I notice alot of other people are having the same problem and wonder if the game itself is glitchy. Either way, this isnt what I payed for. I payed for a complete and playable game and am pretty upset about this whole situation. Can anyone help me?

Just to point this out, there's a big difference between "lag" and "performance". It's much easier to understand someone and the issue they're trying to describe if they use proper terminology.

I've noticed that every user that's posting in this thread with the same issue is using a nVidia video card. It almost seems like you guys might need to update your graphic drivers.

I'm having this same problem

60 fps then random drops to 15 fps and no doors or conversations or other usable items can be accessed

nvidia 9800M GT

However, I have the very latest graphics drivers installed, so that is not the reason.

Have you tried lowering the cinematic light passes?

Hi, Do anyone have the solution to the lagging problem. I get freeze and lags occasionly. At time i would wait for a min or so , it would return to normal.

It just frustrating for me to play the game in this way.

Try setting all graphics to the lowest possible and play it. Does it still happen? If not, keep incrementally bumping up the settings until you find the threshhold. That will likely help if it's a graphics card problem.

Also, overclocking hardware has been known to negatively react to ME2.

A multi-core problem has also been noted, you can find the fix to this in the forums already. Changing the affinity after starting and setting it back while it's running has fixed a few problems as well.

Those would be my first suggestions. Well each person could publish the config utility hardware output and compare. Maybe there's a similarity? I don't have any slow-down issues on my Win7x64 with 3GB RAM and 9xxx series NVIDIA card with ME2. And I've had some very lengthy playtimes.

That's the topic I started, about the exact same problem, maybe something in there helps someone, or at least it helps to pool some of the info for bioware.

I'm having the same issue with ME2. My setup doesn't include anything Nvidia. I have a desktop, running XP with 4GB RAM on a Core2 Duo 2.4 OC'd to 3.0 GHz. GPU is an ATI4890. The thing I've noticed is that the lag or spikes or whatever you call them ALWAYS coincide with a cpu spike. That's why no matter what graphics settings we use, the problem continues. The gpu isn't being challenged, it's something to do with the game code itself...

Out of curiosity, did anyone else having this problem purchase your game online through Steam? I notice the Steam tray applet is always running and even linked to the ME2 executable (can't kill the tray applet while the game is running). I wonder could the issue be related to this?

Anyone else have other ideas?
