  I think the CC is geared toward pretty to begin with since it makes everything perfectly symetrical, which is a key component of what people find attractive.  I think it is more of a challenge to make an avatar that is interesting and has character.  Realistically ugly can be very helpful in that respect, but if one is not that hardcore I think at the very least an avatar should not look like a high-school senior or college freshman--all pie-eyed innocence or faux (poseur) sarcasm.  Unless that's what one wants one's character to be like...  A character like that has not had many life experiences, or endured many hardships.  I guess a human noble fits that the best of all the origins.

Personally, I think growing up in Ferelden would be a little tougher than that though.
