In the ruins in the Brecilian Forest, there's a part of the castle that you end up finding that fountain in front of a locked door that won't open.

There's an empty "earthen jug" sitting on an altar off to the side.  I've tried filling the jug w/ water, pouring it back into the fountain, pouring the water from the jug onto the altar, etc.. All this content and I feel like I'm missing something but everything I try doesn't seem to work.

Do you have to do something special with the water in the jug?  Does it somehow unlock the locked door in front of the fountain?

Which if you stop to think about it, is a really stoooopid way for the ritual to end.  It means the ritual can be performed ONCE.  I sort of got the impression that that chamber was used on a semi-regular basis Back In The Day.  Must hav been a jug vendor somewhere nearby, seeing as how the jugs were one-shot deals.

walk to alter put it on alter
kneel pray
pick it up take one drink
leave alter alone
pour rest of water back in
if you hear jar break you did it right

Cool, Figured it out finally. Thanks all!

Also was able to finally finish the Brecilian Forest quest because of this. Hooked up Oghren with all my shiny new Juggernaut armor.

If u f**k up ritual, u get extra xp for killing summoned mobs, then u can make it properly. Theres also some table in temple where u can read about ritual (writen to codex).

I tried putting the jug on the altar, but nothing happens. Does an elf have to do this or can any character? Is there any benefit to getting this done?

Thanks

or

U can find some table with this codex entry

Four panels reproduced here appear to be part of a much larger mural.
The topmost panel shows a jug overflowing with water, standing
on an altar. Three elves in robes are positioned around the altar,
while a crowd of elves in warlike regalia stands just slightly apart
from them.
Just below is a depiction of all the elves, those in robes and
those in armor, prostrating themselves before the altar with worshipful
expressions.
Third from the top is a carving which shows one of the three
robed figures, a woman with an elaborate tattoo on her face, drinking
from the jug on the altar while the other elves watch.
The bottom image shows the tattooed woman standing waist-deep
in a pool of water. She holds the jug with water spilling out of its
mouth. The armored elves bow before her.
