I ditched Carth, er I mean Kaiden, you really can't have a healthy relationship with such trust issues and then bloody email apologies. I understand his emotional state but to completely write-off your previous lover and leave her alone with a possibly dangerous corporation? I would have went with her(/him), even if I just planned on staying friends after because I care about the people I get close to. I also found Thane's character really interesting and suited for my somewhat violent temperament, he also has great respect for people which I liked. Garrus is a pile of adorable confusion, I can really see his appeal as opposed to Kaiden. So i don't plan on "staying loyal" but as far as I am concerned he stopped trusting in me first, and that ended the relationship right there for me.
That's pretty much how I felt.
Perhaps I've had too much psychology, and had some bitter RL experiences but Kaidan's big issue is that he cannot trust himself, let alone Shepard. He's got too many deep seated issues on his plate to deal with, and Shepard can't hold his hand to make it better. Only Kaidan can do that. While Kaidan isn't quite as bad as Carthe, he's not that far removed from him either. Cute if you're into high school romance. Absolutely definitely not if you're looking for something deeper.
Garrus is simply Garrus. He knows who he is, and while he realizes he skirts the edge at times, he's at least mature enough to realize it and even admit it. Having grown up with cops in my family, I fully understand and appreciate his position, so I can empathize with him completely. Needless to say, for me it was no contest.
Thane was interesting too. While I can't say I found him LI material, I was deeply moved by his story. I was fully expecting to dislike him and was completely taken by surprise.
Given the character developement and the context of the game, my Shepard decided Kaidan was simply a lost cause. Life is full of oppertunities, but short. A suicide mission into possible Reaper territory leaves no room for tackling lost causes but it definitely opens the door for someone who's got my back and trusts me implicately and vice versa. Add to that, a person who's been through literally everything by my side as Kaidan had, and well you get the picture. Only one of my party stood by me through thick and thin. And that person now happens to be my new LI.
I actually found the whole situation to be one of the most touching moments in the game. It fit into my perception of my character and her choices perfectly. Definitely a nice touch on BioWare's part.
I think many are looking at the ME1 LIs as some potential super reward for ME3. I think a lot of people are going to be very disappointed.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the alleged bonus only comes about AFTER a playthrough of ME3 after it's released. The devs haven't specified and they do enjoy playing those types of games before they release a game.

Then he found Tali, the young, curious Quarian. He got to know her well, got close to her, and then fell for her. She replaced the void that was left by Liara, and he doesn't mind at all. The Asari he came to love died with his body two years ago in his opinion.

When I play the game, I don't play Paragon/Renegade, I play my version of Shepard. He's a guy who will go out of his way to help anyone, but is not above lying or doing bad things to help the mission. When he went to Liara, he was expecting a nice, happy reunion. What he got was some cold-hearted **** who had become her mother. It doesn't matter that she got his body back, if she really did care she would not hide her true emotions or be such a cold person.

I agree 100 percent with what you said. I played the same with my Shepard when he was with Ash. That part of him died two years ago, and it was time to move on.

With that said, if Tali had responded to my flirting as a female Shepherd, sorry Liara, there is only room for one alien...

Talking to Liara just a little bit was all it took for me to leave her. She's no longer the person I cared about and I obviously mean far more to Tali than I ever did to Liara. I don't care what Liara's reasons are, she could have came with and I would have gladly helped her with what she was doing. Liara can sit in her office being a cold obsessive ****, I'll go save the galaxy again and do it with someone at my side that really seems to care about me.
There's ALOT more to this than you know.
Since you've probably completed the game already I'll tell you, though I'll put a big gap beneath the spoiler tag in case you REALLY don't want to know why ****ing Liara isn't right:
*** SPOILERS ***
If it wasn't for Liara, Shepard would basically BE that Human Reaper at the end of the game. Shadow Broker had Shepard and was about to sell his corpse to the Collectors so they could integrate it into the Human Reaper - this is why Harbinger is after you (why he's SO obsessed with getting Shepard in particular though, I don't know). Liara managed to get you back from the Shadow Broker before the dealings and gave you to Cerberus for the Lazarus Project.
*** SPOILER END ***

That's what Liara believes. But the whole beginning sequence basically shoots that whole thing down. The Collectors could have ensured that Shepard was captured before blowing the Normandy to bits. Or picked him/her up after the fact.
If they had no problems catching the Normandy II even after upgrades, they'd have had no problem with the original Normandy.
Liara said a lot of things, but she's been played the whole time like a puppet. The truth, and what Liara says I think are two different things.
Secondly, the sequence with Miranda and TIM happen prior to the Normandy being destroyed. It gave me the impression that Cerberus was contemplating approaching Shepard about taking on the Reapers given the Council's response. For all you know, TIM planted that idea in Liara's head simply to get Shepard's body. The impression I got with the Collectors throughout the game is that they were trying to kill Shepard, not capture him/her.
Bottom line... Liara was played and deep down she knows it.

Well then. Did you stay loyal to your previous 'love interest' or did you completely forget about them?
Personally I was/am planning on staying loyal and haven't made any 'moves' yet but Tali gets more interesting and interesting while Liara was shockingly cold.
I'll probably just 'try' to ignore any temptation and go for Tali on my second, probably Sentinel, playthrough. Tough, tough! (But I bet ME3 will have something interesting in store...)
I was loyal to my love interest and will be for the forseeable future. If the DLC character is Kasumi and is an LI for femshep, I'll think about cheating, otherwise, Liara for sure.

Listen to Harbringer's lines when you're fighting him across the game. He specifically states he wants you alive quite a few times, but also wouldn't be opposed to killing you if you prove too problematic for that to work out properly. It's one of those things where they would prefer capturing you alive, probably to integrate into that new Reaper, but it isn't so paramount that they would risk their other objectives just to see it through. Or, that's at least how I saw it given Harbringer's lines and the events of the entire game.ShadowWolf_Kell wrote...

I do believe Liara did get played on some level, she was dealing with Cerberus after all, but from what I saw in game the Collector's interest in capturing you seemed genuine. Guess we'll just have to wait for the rest of the comic to come out and see.

Oh well, here's to hoping Kaidan doesn't have to wait another two years to finally hear Shepard say I..Love..You. I mean come on, she's taking her sweet time
