Anyone else unphased by Collector's plot twist?

The prothean concept in ME1 was so fascinating and it felt like it would remain a mystery. Sometimes I think things can (and should, even) be left in the dark, because it can create even stronger emotions within the audience. Imagination will always be the most powerful trick one can use to evoke feelings in someone. I liked the idea of the Collector's being a strange, creepy race on their own, and making them work with the Reapers made them even more scary, I can imagine.
Iunno. It felt silly and unneeded. I felt like I was a schoolkid having everything explained to me. It made me not like the story as much. ME1 had such a strong mystery element in it that was incredibly powerful, and... well, what happened?

I always thought the Protheans would be kind of like...well...I don't know elves or something, (not just like elves but with certain elvish characteristics ie. tall, slim, noble, slightly aurisocratic or w/e) flying bugs doesn't leave much of an impression O.o
I imagined them to be different looking, as well. I also thought the statues in Ilos were prothean gods or something, so. They didn't fit the look that Protheans had.

It was more unexpected than pretty much any other Bioware plot twist(You are Revan! Master Li betrays you! Saw both of these coming miles away, zero surprise there), but it wasn't like, "OMG! I can't believe that!!!!" I was more like, "Huh, that's pretty cool."
The way my femshep said it, "THE COLLECTORS ARE PROTHEANS!!! *dramatic pause*" made me feel like I was watching old 90s X-Men. Anyway, I didn't really go, "that's cool" at all. I wish I could, but I think it was a silly move.

EDIT:
The only way I can see this happening is if you were playing a female Revan...because Revan looks male no matter what gender you choose.

I didn't mind it, though. I don't think 'explaining it' hurts anything. Without explaining stuff, the world makes little sense. There's room with a few mysteries without throwing up your hands and not explaining the backstory.

2) No, the Protheans did not always look like that. The Reapers bio-engineered them to become what they are now, the Collectors, because they could not turn them into Reapers for some reason due to a mutation in their DNA that rejected Reaper technology.
3) I believe Protheans did have elvish characteristics, and the shadows we saw from ME1 were early Collectors. They didn't just capture all the Protheans at once and turn them into Collectors instantly you know. Hell, they could have used the collectors during that cycle to make killing off the Protheans easier, they were supposedly very hard to overcome, even harder than the Humans. Just we have the edge they didn't because we were warned early on.
4) Revan plot twist still owns all twists out there. But maybe ME3 will surprise us. JOKER ACTUALLY HAS NORMAL BONES!

So were the Protheans always flying cockroaches or were they just totally screwed with by the reapers?
They were said to be genetically engineered for the Reapers' designs. The original Protheans looked more like the statues on Ilos, if the vision is to be believed.
I think the Protheans turned into the cockroachy Collectors when the Reapers got to them. They could just as easily say that you didn't completely comprehend the vision until the information you saw in this game, but I'm hoping they won't. That would suck everything ever. Major letdown. There's nothing noble, aristocratic, or mythical about the Protheans if they were those cockroach things.
I like the Collectors as they are--but I don't want that to have been their original form. Besides, it is a hundred thousand times more horrifying if they were turned into such ugly chittering beasts by the Reapers.
Lucy--I totally agree with you on the mystery element of ME1 being one of the strongest elements that I liked about the game, but if you think about it, it takes more guts to explain your story than to leave it all up in the air.
Then again, I think they left just enough mystery about the Protheans--I got the strong impression that the Collectors were NOT anything like the original Protheans due to the genetic engineering the Reapers did. Much like the Keepers. Just compare the Ilos statues to those things and think about how large the difference is.
I hope one day we'll see a real Prothean. That some small bit of them remains, maybe even took to the skies like the flotilla and became a migrant race. But only if they really do a fantastic job of evoking the same sense of wonder I felt on Ilos.

I was surprised when it came about but I gotta agree with OP, its not what I would have gone with. Protheans WERE mysterious and what not, not the mystery gone and the pay off rather blah other then initial shock value.
Heh, you said what I wanted to say in a shorter time span. Lol!
