Any use for this? I heard/read that gems can be useful later but this stuff seems useless and it's taking up space in my inventory.

Haven't found a use for it yet, and it isn't classified in "Crafting" components... so one could logically assume it is just vendor trash(items you sell to vendors for cash, no other benefit).
However, it is priced like a crafting component, and there is a LOT of it. I've found like 30 so far. I have the feeling it started off as a crafting component for writing spell scrolls or something, and at some point they removed that option from the game, but just left them all in there.
On the plus side, if you sell it all to a vendor who doesn't disappear, aka the vendor in your campsite(assuming that dwarf follows you?) You should be able to buy it back if you suddenly need it later on.
Same story for the Wolf Pelts.
