I'm posting this just to share the information, as I don't think I've seen this thing been mentioned.
I managed to win the Redcliff battle without losing even a single knight or militia man.
On my first run through DA:O, the Redcliff battle took me an entire weekend. The final fight, which I finally managed to win, took me over two hours. And not a single soldier, outside my party, survived. None! And they even went rather early. This was on 'Normal', but prior to any patching.
Now on this second run through, I had better melee talents in the party and Morrigan had learned 'Heal'. And the game was patched 1.01 and 1.02 to be much easier, of course.
There were other differences too. I managed to squeeze the chantry Mother to produce some silver amulets for the knights, providing the "Maker's protection", or that was what I had her agree on, to tell the knights, against her conscience. And I took every opportunity to reinforce the morale of the men with confident dialogue choices.
And I didn't use the burning oil. While the oil had been the key to my victory, the first time, it also provides the knights with an opportunity to commit suicide by standing in the flames. And they seem to absolutely insist on doing that.
Anyway, the battle sort of went well. I only lost one man, before the game crashed at the end load. I sighed and replayed the battle. I couldn't quite forget that first time though, when I only lost one man. So the next day I decided to have another go at it. To try to win without losses. And I did it!
And let me tell you, it's quite satisfying. Redcliff is fully populated and everybody is so happy and grateful. Quite contrast to the mourning you get if you take losses.

I did it with a mage on Hard once. The knights are relatively easy to keep alive as long as you don't light the fire, but the militia is a lot trickier. You need to get there fast and you pretty much need Heal because the zombies are already engaged with them and will be doing a lot of damage. I think it would be relatively easy with two spirit healers (e.g. PC mage + Wynne) who use Group Heal for the party and Heal for the villagers.
And yes, it is satisfying -- I think the cutscene following the fight even changes a bit to reflect that nobody died.
