Hi, I've googled this problem for the last hour and tried many things but I can't get my head around it.

OS: Win XP 64 (I know...)
My Documents are on D: (which has always been troublesome with games based on the Unreal engine)

But I've always been able to solve the My Documents issues with games like Bioshock, Dragon Age and ME1. This time, however, I can't for the love of god manage to save my game or settings. I first installed the game on E: (games partition) then read somewhere that Mass Effect 2 doesn't actually like being on E:. So I moved (i.e. copied/paste) it to D: but still no luck...

Any hints?

Cheers :(

The game can't save anything because it sounds like you removed the folders from when they were on e:. So the game is loading the default settings and cannot find the folders to save to right now.
What I'd do is try to move the folder back where you installed it.
If that doesn't work try reinstalling to the same place you installed it the first time. I'm using the Steam install version with no problems and it's on e: btw

Well, it wasn't working on E: either anyway, that's why I moved the game to D:

And I'd gladly reinstall it if I didn't have to redownload the whole game at 100kb/s (1Mb connection). I don't think it'd solve the problem anyway. I'm clueless on this one :/

Oh... ouch. If you got the Steam version I think you can fix it by moving the game back to e:, then move the Steam folder and everything in it to the new location.

If you don't got the one from Steam it might work the same way, like if it's EADM move their folder over. I'd check their websites about moving installs if you didn't get it from Steam.

The game runs fine, it just won't save, be it on D: or E: The save folders are there, in My Documents. I can even delete them and they will be automatically recreated when running the configuration tool. It just won't > save < anything for some weird reason (bought it legally, downloaded it from EA Downloader and all...).

/sigh :|

hmm now I'm thinking it's a windows account issue that doesn't have the right permissions... yeah it's your documents folder, but I'm pretty sure these guys don't test on anything except admin accounts in windows.

trying playing/saving using an admin account?

I'm always logged in as admin on my machine. I'm telling you, I don't get it... Next step is finding someone kind enough to start the game for me, save it and give me the save file using my ME1 save, hoping it'll work... Isn't there a support email instead of those forums?

yeah... at this point I'd try to get my money back and if you're feeling adventurous get it from Steam heh. EA's digital distribution system is a steaming pile right now.

I found a way around this.. its a little annoying but here goes

Basically switch your My Documents folder back to the C:\\ drive.. you will be asked if you want to copy all of your files back, say no.just copy the bioware folder over. launch ME2 it will then allow you to load your game. load the game, save the game. quit ME2.

switch your My Documents folder back, and recopy the bioware folder.. and voila.. it should all work perfectly now.

I used the above steps to some success, but only some. Cerberus now keeps my settings, in the 'My Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect 2/BIOGame' folder 3 new folders appeared one holding a Player1.prf file which I assume holds the information.

I still cannot load the game that I have saved before, and after resuming my game, saving it again and trying to load it I still cannot see anything.

(win xp sp3 64bit)

same here, i am able to continue the game from my last time, BUT:

- when I click SAVE GAME, saving icon appears. After that, I go to LOAD GAME and nothing is there, i dont have one single saved game, (but I made many...)

- no setting is keept, everytime i launch the game every setting is set back to its default. I have to remap the keys every single time i start playing.

- only fully accomplished acchievements are keept, any acchievement that is not fully accompished (eg: 15 headshots completed of the required 30 ) are cleared on next program launch

now i am going to try Dark_Sunari's workaround, i will report back...

the game itself is superb, but with these problems it is a pain in my ass...

So I tried "Dark_Sunari's workaround" it gave the same result as MuppetBrown reported:

- keyboard mapping (and i guess every other settings as well) saved OK

- Cerberus login saved OK

- Still no saved game appear at LOAD GAME section. I see the saved items at the SAVE panel, but i dont at the LOAD section...

Exact same problem here. Game just simply wont save.

Looked at my MyDocuments folder and the save folders are there but no saves. When I play and save it tells me I am saving but when I go to load of leave game nothing there.

Any ideas?

Same problem: have XP SP3, My Documents on another drive, can save but not load. The files show up in the save screen and on the file system but nowhere else. "Dark_Sunari's workaround" does not work: reverted My Docs back to the original setting, copied the saves, the game still doesn't see them. Need a fix or a workaround, please help...

OK, found another workaround. Nothing groundbreaking, of course: basically, like a Dark Sunari's method but you don't copy the old Mass Effect 2 saves (maybe mine were corrupted or something) or the whole BioWare folder, for that matter. Yeah, you've heard it right: you have to move your My Docs folder to its original location, start the game from scratch (I hope you haven't got far -- I only made it to the Normandy 2), then save again. The good news is that after you've saved the game and confirmed that you can load it again, you can move your My Docs back to its original location (including the BioWare folder, of course) and the game will not mind.

You lose your old character but hey, at least, you get to play. Also, thank BioWare for letting you save your character's appearance as a string. I knew I'd need it. :D

As a precaution, don't log on to Cerberus until after you've confirmed that your saves can be loaded again. I dunno if it has something to do with that, but the first time I played, I logged on right away and the saves didn't work. This time around, I waited until I confirmed it saved and THEN logged on and it worked. Caution seems reasonable to me...

PS: I WOULD like to see this problem addressed in the next patch, please, because things like this (that, and the unskippable cutscenes you've already seen) are a great frustration factor for me and many other players...

Very annoying issue.  Hard to fathom a game developer in 2010 that still struggles with the location of these player type files.  It is so basic and simple, yet they continue to show their lack of commitment to quality making such micky mouse screw ups.
