I think that if you remove (rename) the .ini alltogether, the game will overwrite it with the default one. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure that the default .ini is somewhere among the game's files. Just search for it.

It's not opening in Notepad 2. Your last explanation doesn't make any sense. I've been attempting to use your fix but, as the other guy said, it can't seem to read the .ini file. And every time I copy and paste the info. from the .ini file it does not save as a Notepad 2 file, I am not familiar with this kind of stuff so I have no idea what the hell I'm doing even with the directions.

Hello, guys.

Like many of you tweakers I came up with a problem that ME2 crashed upon editing of Coalesced.ini. It turns out that Bioware programmers didn't care much about ppl who'd like to edit extended game settings and are not processing a case when .ini file has been edited. Recently some guy wrote a Ruby script to fix that file after it's been edited. However you needed to install Ruby environment on your PC to use that script.

I didn't like that Ruby install thing and wrote a program in C++ that doesn't need anything else to run. Here it is:

http://www.apartment...ME2IniFixer.zip
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H1A7TN50

Just put it to \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\BioGame\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Config\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\PC\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Cooked and launch every time after you've edited the file.

You should keep in mind that Coalesced.ini is a binary file, which means that it contains important symbols that are not visible to your ordinary text editor. So, saving the file with Windows Notepad will render it useless. You'll need an editor which is capable of dealing with binary files to edit Coalesced.ini

I suggest either Notepad2 or Notepad++:

Happy Tweaking!

P.S.: the readme's in Russian since I am Russian, I didn't feel much like translating :) If you care for what's written there, try using Google Translate.

I know the thread is old, but I after searching for awhile for a way to cheat for a Steam version, I just found this yesterday. I just want to say it works perfect for me, and thanks!

PS: I haven't tried what others suggested yet; maybe it's even easier.

You cant edit DLC items unless you import them and their properties into the coalesced.ini first.
In this thread, tere is a link to a post on how to modify DLC guns, same theory would apply for other DLC items like armour.

Just to help out those who might reformat their systems and find the ini fixer no longer works (like me), you will need these C++ redistributables. Not sure exactly which one did the trick, but only worked after I downloaded and installed the pair of them. One is the 2008 package, the other is 2010.

hi corvin,

i would really like to thank you for coming up with the tweaks for ME2.

i have tried and tried to follow your method for fixing the coalesced.ini but it gives me errors like

" permission denied for writing to "coalesced.ini.bak" please provide permission ot write .

i have given full permission to my ini file for users, administrators and system but still i cannot get your fixer to work for me.

i am using win7/64 bit system.

hope you have a solution for me.

THanks
akki

Hi there, I know this is an old thread now but it's the best one I've found.

Using Notepad++ I made changes to the Coalesced.ini file and Mass Effect 2 wouldn't launch (gasp!)
After using your clever little fix I can now play again (hurray!)

If anyone has trouble with binding like I did, it was because I put them in the wrong spot, they go in the:
[SFXGame.SFXGameModeDefault] section.

Thankyou again, for saving me from having to scan planets for hours, in a game, which is supposed to be fun. End rant.
