I am staring at this character class screen unsure of what to select. For those of you that have tried more than one class, would you say all the new powers make the soldier a waste of time? Is the powers system so much better now that it is more worth it go adept or sentinel or another class (especially considering there is apparently a way to learn a new weapon skill later on)?
I used soldier the first time but now I'm wondering if I'm missing out if I go the same route.
Thanks.
Soldier a waste of time now?

I'd say pick something else, only because you can be a badass weapon-user with any class now, so you might as well take one with powers too. Plus, powers like Overload, Incinerate, Warp, etc. are really, REALLY helpful. My team pretty much killed the last boss without firing a shot.

i just finished my first playthrough and i to used soldier in ME1 and kept him in 2.. i was quite frankly bored with it.. 4 different kinds of AMMO is basically all you get... With the new ammo system you spend alot of time out of ammo since all you use is guns.. i'm starting a new char to go vanguard or sent so i do have biotic options when ammo is an issue...

Soldier is IMO the most boring class

I'm 13 hours into the game as a soldier, and I'm honestly having a hard time imagining how I would get by without my trusty assault rifle and sniper rifle - with the occasional, but probably unnecessary, use of the heavy pistol (the shotgun however has gone pretty much entirely unused).
My other choices of classes would most likely have been either sentinel or engineer, but even with tech/biotic powers you're bound to still be doing a whole lot of shooting, and I love the options for long range engagement the AR and SR give me there.
Oh, and adrenaline burst rocks for lining up those perfect headshots. And the different ammo types you can switch between are more than a little useful as well.

Honestly I think if anything hurt the soldier class it's warp ammo. Ever since I joined up at the old forums I've defended the soldier class as looking cool, and as having the ability to adapt to any enemy due to all the different ammo available to it for taking down shields/armor/barriers. So here I am doing my first playthrough and I unlock warp ammo. It's good against every kind of defense so it makes ammo swapping redundant. Not sure if I'm going to bother with a soldier playthrough any more.

Soldier is actually pretty tactical. You can use all weapons. Use the Assault Rifle as a Primary weapon. Oh no! He is getting to lose! Take out that dangerously awesome shot gun. Well all the close quarters enemies are dead. Oh dear a sniper! Get your sniper rifle out and snipe him back.
Running out of ammo? Get your pistol out and make a stand! Oh dear! It's a Big Mec! Get your heavy weapon out! Getting shot up? Adrenaline Rush!
Hurray! You win! Plus you get a conclusion shot. They are useful!

This, more or less, unless you like speed running through the game, in which case it's great
Adrenaline burst seems rather useless to me except for the health bonus at the end. You can just go to the power menu and freeze time completely while aiming, so yeah...

Yeah, my Soldier confronting that big-ass Collector thing at the end of the Horizon mission was intense. I ran dry with my Vindicator assault rifle and was down to blasting at it with my Hand Cannon.
But... that's me. I'm perfectly okay just being the Weapons Guy.

The Soldier has some down sides. I need some Biotic powers because some enemies do not take much damage with my Assault Rifle.
I did that same mission on Horizon, I took down Barrier with Sniper Rifle, Shot gun Armor with Assault Rifle, and at the end I blew it up with a grenade launcher for the finale, though I did die 5 times.

Yeah, as an Engineer I didn't make much use of the drones. Every now and then they'd come in handy, but for the most part it was all about the Engineer's other powers. It's a ridiculously fun class.
Incidentally, I did pick up an assault rifle about halfway through, even though I didn't really need it. When I did use a gun, it was to finish someone off with a headshot or two, and I mostly just used the pistol for that.

Soldier is definitely my favorite class. Some people call it boring, but that's only because they like powers more than weapons. (Which is fine.) Just remember that just as the other classes have more (active) powers at their disposal, so does the Soldier have more weapons at hers.
The Soldier can handle any situation and will go fine with any squad-mate. It's a VERY strong class, so if that's your angle, no worries.
Regarding Warp ammo: It's sort of like ARs in that it's good across the board, but the specialized varieties are stronger under specific circumstances. I prefer switching between Tungsten and Heavy Disruptor ammo. That covers pretty much all bases too, except it's +60% damage (plus weapon overheat, synthetic explode/disable) for Disruptor and +70% damage with Tungsten, compared to a straight +50% damage for Warp. I guess Warp ammo deals more damage to Barriers too, but Soldier has Concussive Shot for that. Finally, Warp ammo does more to targets already affected by biotics, so I guess you would need to factor that in. In conclusion, I'd say that Warp ammo isn't better in every single way, just USUALLY better.
It also has to be said that the LMG is almost worth it in itself. It just shreds the opposition to pieces. After I got it, nearly all enemies went down in short order.

So it's actually possible to play a class like the engineer almost without using guns at all and only your two(?) truly offensive powers, cryo blast and overload? And AI hacking when you run into mechs, but 13 hours in they haven't been as common as I had expected.

With 4 ranks into reflexes you can get by with just using the sniper rifle if you really want to. I love it.

I play soldier.
I put slam as a special ability though because throw was a bonus ability in ME1, so technically my Shep is a biotic.
Slam is the coolest power next to singularity anyway.

Warp ammo says it's better against barriers and unprotected. Nothing about armor or shields, that's what the other types are for. It has a lower bonus, except when they're affected by biotics, but that only happens when they're at nothing but health anyways, so they're practically dead by then.
What makes you say Warp is so much better?

I played the first time as a Vanguard, and damn, he was useless. The second time i played as a Soldier and it was great having access to all weapons.

I am currently on my second playthrough using my ME1 soldier and I find it way *way* more fun than my infiltrator playthrough was, especially given the pleasant (and unexpected!) repeat playthrough bonus power (among other bonuses). Intense, lots of weapon switching, lots of tactics. I found that with my infiltrator, I didn't use cloak nearly as much as I thought I would, and I can replicate sniper time dilation with the soldier's adrenalin rush ability. Also, being able to run around fast is a huge boon.

Yeah, I tried all the ME1 classes, liked soldier the best, and am using mt ME1 soldier for my first ME2 play-through. The sniper rifle and heavy weapons rock, especially after doing your research and upgrades. I liked the flavor of the different models and companies in ME1, and missed that variey of customization and detail in ME2, but that is not enough for me to say the soldier was boring. It's fun, just not as much role-play/world fluff. The only thing I hate with ME2 soldiers is having to constantly backtrack to places I already cleared to get more ammo. The ME1 guns were better for that, just throw in a Mark X heatsink, squeeze off short bursts, and your assault rifle was always good to go.

I don't understand people who play infiltrators without using cloak.
How do you setup one-shot kills?
On Hardcore I would have run out of ammo really fast if not for assasin cloak.
That being said, Heightened Adrenaline Rush >> Assasin Cloak. It provides the same 75% damage boost but with better time slow down, AND with all weapons AND it doesn't go away after the first shot so you can use it with an assault rifle.
The Soldier is fun because of the weapon swapping and being able to "snipe" with assault rifles. This is especially true if you don't exploit the "pause" feature and actually "work" for your headshots.
That said, Heightened Adrenaline Rush might be a little too good. It's making Hardcore too easy so I might restart on Insanity.
