So here I am doing my first playthrough and I unlock warp ammo. It's good against every kind of defense so it makes ammo swapping redundant.

Wait wait wait.

Warp ammo says it's better against barriers and unprotected. Nothing about armor or shields, that's what the other types are for. It has a lower bonus, except when they're affected by biotics, but that only happens when they're at nothing but health anyways, so they're practically dead by then.

What makes you say Warp is so much better?

Um, here's the description,

A biotic mass effect field keyed into this ammo increases damage against health, ARMOR, AND BARRIERS. Does extra health damage to targets affected by biotics.

So I was wrong about shields, it's still effective against 2 out of 3 and since I find shields go down in all of one shot from my shotgun or 2 seconds of full spray from smg after a charge I don't have much issue with it not affecting shields.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to simplify his life. If I can play the game with one ammo instead of swapping around all of the place then I'll do that. So for me, warp ammo trumps switching around when even though the % sounds high, the actual effect seems negligible.

In the derelict collector ship, you have the option to choose a new weapon specialization. My adept is currently using the Vindicator battle rifle :)

I love my soldier! Heightened Adrenaline Rush + Revenant Machine Gun = Either many dead enemies with no layers of defense or all layers of defense gone for one enemy, leaving them easy prey for my squad mates to finish off.

Is the shotgun actually useful in ME 2? It seems that in most cases enemies never come close enough to make using a shotgun worth it. Assault rifle seems to be the way to go nearly every time.

Playing a Soldier is the closest you can get to being a one man army.

OOO-rah!

Mechs, varren, Krogan, and Vanguards all like to get close. Oh and husks.

Can't speak for the soldier class, but as a vanguard the shot gun is SPECTACULAR. ON hardcore even fully armored/shielded enemies go down in no time after a charge and 2 shotgun blasts to the face. I love the shotty.

I went infiltrator on my 1st playthrough, and I can probably count on my hands the amount of times I used my cloak at the begninngs. But then I also play a lot of FPS games and can line up a headshot pretty quick. Near the end I realised that it gives me a damage bonus and started using it more though.

The shotgun is good for when an enemy manages to get really close and your Adrenaline Rush is still cooling down. In this situation, you want to take down the enemy ASAP before he does some serious damage and the shotgun not only takes off a big chunk of health, it'll also often make the opponent stagger.

Assault Rifle should definitely be your main gun but there are times where it does fall short. Sometimes, it's much better to just switch to your sniper rifle to take down a target far away because of the low accuracy of an Assault Rifle at a distance. I just went over the shotgun so I won't repeat that. My pistol seems to be the only weapon I don't use. I tried using it in the beginning to deal with the armor layer of defense but I often found Adrenaline Rush + Assault Rifle is more efficient at taking down this layer of defense.

If you're going to pick only 1 type of ammo, warp is the way to go.  It's the most versatile as it affects barriers, armor, health and stops Krogan/Vorcha regen.

However, I like to specialize a bit more.
I take Armor piercing rounds on my infiltrator or soldier.  Max it out to tungsten rounds for 70% weapon damage to shields and health.  Then I use Miranda's overload for shields and use Jack's squad warp ammo for barriers/regen.

The extra damage from tungsten rounds is VERY noticable.  Escpecially if you use sniper rifles.  With max upgrades, tungsten rounds, assasin cloak and the widow maker, I can one-shot a heavy mech.  Very satisfying.

Tungsten rounds along with heightened adrenaline rush also mean I can take most regular mobs with a single burst of machine gun fire.  It makes efficiently clearing out waves of enemies so much easier.

I head shotted and killed 4 bluesun troopers with my soldier just like 5 mins ago with one adrenaline rush. LOL. did I mention it was on insanity? Let's see infiltrator do that. LOL.^2

And when the sheet gets out of control, I can whip out my LMG and make all the bad men go away.

That said, Heightened Adrenaline Rush might be a little too good. It's making Hardcore too easy so I might restart on Insanity.

I'm kind of running into the same issue, and giving serious thought to going with Infiltrator.  Don't know if I want to wait as long as you need to in order to acquire the Assault Rifle skill for that class, though; the Vindicator is, at least the way I play, an unbeatable gun.  Sure, I use the Widow for bosses from time to time, but as an all-around weapon, I think it's hard to beat the Vindicator.

This sounds like good news. I WANT to like all the classes, so it's not like I was arguing stat points or anything, just what I encountered playing as a vanguard. Taking down heavy mechs in one shot is certainly something I cant do as a vanguard.

I am staring at this character class screen unsure of what to select. For those of you that have tried more than one class, would you say all the new powers make the soldier a waste of time? Is the powers system so much better now that it is more worth it go adept or sentinel or another class (especially considering there is apparently a way to learn a new weapon skill later on)?

I used soldier the first time but now I'm wondering if I'm missing out if I go the same route.

Thanks.

To actually respond to your post, I'll say that I'm halfway through with a Soldier on Hardcore, and I've barely touched my squadmates' powers.  Biotics are a waste of time on any difficulty level beyond Normal, and Tech stuff is great, I guess, but I've got ammo that does that job, too.

You can indeed learn a new weapon skill later on as a non-Soldier, but it's not an immediate thing.  It also cuts both ways; you can learn certain Tech and Biotic powers as a Soldier.  I'm not sure why you would ever use them, though.

There is no need to restart on insanity, just switch it over.

Even though my soldier pwns mad face, insanity is still a challenge and easy to die on if you slip up. I'm playing through now on insanity with my soldier, with one catch: no medigel for teamates. Like Ivan Drago, if they die, they die.

Actually, it just occurred to me that Infiltrators get the slow-time effect when using sniper rifles. They probably get the same damage bonus Soldiers get with Adrenaline rush.

This means that a soldier with Heightened Adrenaline Rush and Max Commando would get:

75% + 15% = 90% bonus damage while sniping.

On the other hand, an infiltrator with Assassin Cloak and Max Assassin would get:

75% + 15% + 60% = 150% damage while sniping.

If this is correct, infiltrators are still the best snipers while Soldiers are more versatile over all. Seems balanced to me.

Soldier is the best, but most boring class.

This, more or less, unless you like speed running through the game, in which case it's great

Adrenaline burst seems rather useless to me except for the health bonus at the end. You can just go to the power menu and freeze time completely while aiming, so yeah...

Adrenaline is the soldiers most important ability.  Devasting with the the sniper rilfe -- the one semi automatic one.

I am currently on my second playthrough using my ME1 soldier and I find it way *way* more fun than my infiltrator playthrough was, especially given the pleasant (and unexpected!) repeat playthrough bonus power (among other bonuses). Intense, lots of weapon switching, lots of tactics. I found that with my infiltrator, I didn't use cloak nearly as much as I thought I would, and I can replicate sniper time dilation with the soldier's adrenalin rush ability. Also, being able to run around fast is a huge boon.

Other classes cannot run as fast as the soldier?

Soldiers are easily one of the most powerful classes, if not the most, in the game. Their ammo lets them deal with any situation and Adrenaliine Rush lets you slow mo and nail headshots, dropping everyone in a room. Concusive shot can knock down even the most powerful enemies and you also get Assualt Rifles/Revanant which lets you mow down all those bum rushing melee enemies.

With all that said I find using powers much more fun.

I can't understand the popular believe that the Soldier is a boring class in ME2.
Well the Soldier doesn't have such fancy powers as throw and so on. But from an tactical perspective he's a top notch ^^ thoughful use of Squad and non-squad munitions makes the game veeery much fun ;)

Yep. Nothing quite as fun as popping out from a corner and blowing away a couple people with shotgun headshots with adrenaline rush,.

Lucky for you Bioware made it so pretty much none of the other classes could do this all that much either by default.
