Im in the werewolf ruins, and doing the fountain jug thing. However when I take the jug to the altar I just get "This altar has an indentation that looks like something could fit there." Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I think you are going to wrong Altar. The Altar you ment to use is in the same room as the fountain. I still don't know what that other little Altar in the library room is for.

The little altar in the side room is for a phylactary in the same room. The Fountain/Altar combo is frustrating the hell out of me right now.

Fountain/Alter combo is listed on a tablet on that level, closer towards the start.
I think the combination is: fill the jug, place it on the alter, pray, take a sip, take the jug, empty it into the fountain.
The Altar and Phylactery in the Library open up the Arcane Warrior specialization.

Follow these steps for the Altar and Jug of Water
1. Get jug and fill with water
2. Take jug filled with water to Altar to the left on same room, not far from fountain
3. take zip of water
4. pray in altar
