I'm certain I saw a redshirt get impaled by a cluster-husk-thing coming out of the elevator during Joker's sequence. I'm pretty sure that guy's dead.

Lol I think everyone saw that guy get owned by the Praetorian. Speaking of which, I was playing veteran difficulty and sort of expected to see Praetorians at the collector base but there were none. Did anyone encounter a praetorian on higher difficulty levels?

My ending

* Full ship and character specific upgrades. Everyone including Zaeed is loyal. Used Renegade to diffuse Miranda/Jack argument and Paragon to diffuse Tali/Legion confrontation.

* Legion reactivated and loyalty quest done as soon as I picked him up (before collector attack on Normandy)

* Jerked around bit doing some random missions after collector attack, before going through Omega4 relay

* Thane was Tech Specialist, Jacob was Fire Team Leader, Garrus and Miranda in my party.

* Thane dies at first door.

* Dr Chakwas and some redshirts only survivors, no escort back to Normandy

* Samara was Biotic Specialist, Miranda Fire Team Leader, Garrus and Legion in my party.

* Everyone survives to 2nd door, Miranda takes a hit

* Speech was the 'renegade' options about kicking arse

* Miranda and Garrus were party members for final boss, base was kept intact for study.

* All remaining team members make it out.

After reading through most of the thread I feel like it's still abit unclear wether you can do Legion's loyalty mission before going through the omega relay. Some have written that you can do legion's loyalty mission directly after the reaper IFF mission and having the whole crew survive, and some say that you'll lose half your crew.

There's a bit of a wrinkle with Legion's loyalty mission; if you fully explore the dialog options with Legion immediately after the Reaper IFF mission (immediately, as in, don't do any other missions or browse around star systems; if you accidentally find an N7 mission, the Joker level may trigger) you should learn about his loyalty mission and the game will allow you to go out and do it.  This is before the Joker level.

The game starts counting missions after the Joker level.

Concerning the deaths: even with 10 squadmates everyone can die:

1: hull breach
2: engine overload
3: ship damage
4: bad tech
5: bad group leader
6: bad biotic
7: bad group leader
8: illoyal character at the door/not enough characters at the door
9: illoyal character at the boss: dies
10: illoyal character at the boss: dies

And when Shepard is the only one left there is nobody who can help him aboard the Normandy > dead.

Hm, that's why it makes no sense to me that Ken`s Samara survived despite having no loayality. That`s the decisive factor for survival, otherwise it would be of no use.

There are actually 11 team members if you include Zaeed and death #8 is not guaranteed (the mysterious holding-the-line death).  In my case Mordin was in my squad, so Samara and Zaeed survived holding-the-line.  It's possible that not taking Mordin would've resulted in his death as well as both final boss squad members, which would've left me with only one surviving team member.

Also, the first Fireteam Leader will not actually die themselves; disloyalty here causes the Tech Specialist to die (failure by either one or both of them only kills the Tech Specialist).  Though you missed the Crew Escort in your count, so it evens out to 10 anyway :P

Thanks for making this thread! I just beat it with squad/crew/shep all pulling through alive.

The choices are pretty simple actually... aka Grunt is not a tech expert lol

I took Mordin with me on the final boss, and trust me... I was so nervous he'd be killed in that weird factor...

Has anyone narrowed this down any further?

Has anyone run missions with the same choices multiple times to see if randomness and/or timing is a factor?

I have to admit that I didnt know about survive points. I choose characters to certain roles because I liked them or thought that they will be usefull in that role. I started to think that maybe more previous decisions have impact on that who will die and who survive.

I think I missed the last upgrade for Legion's rifle, and I lost Mordin only in the final sequence. It looks like loyalty, all ship upgrades, and all character upgrades are the way to go.

Who dies in the final sequence more depends on who you picked to go to the final battle with you.  I ran the ending twice - first time, I selected Miranda and Garrus, and Mordin died.  The second time I picked Miranda and Legion and Mordin lived.  It has something to do with the people you leave to hold the door.

This may have been said already (wish search worked), but can anyone confirm whether the entire Normandy crew survives? When I did it, only doing Legion's loyalty mission, the only crew members it actually shows are Kelly, Dr. Chakwas and some random guy I didn't recognize. I assume this is the best ending, but I'm really curious if at least the two engineers and the cook survived (mostly because all three characters were awesome and better return in ME3). As far as I can tell, the game doesn't really let you know...

If Kelly is alive, then everyone else survived (except crewman Hadley, who got impaled by a Praetorian...).

I did some more testing with the crew rescue and it seems like doing even one mission after they're kidnapped results in half the crew dying.  I guess I miscounted or got mixed up with pre-kidnap missions (like Legion's loyalty quest).  Revising the main post.

I am pretty sure the X factor is how much you talk to a character about themselves. I had done everything with every character but I hadn't talked to Samara, Legion or Thane a lot and I kept loading from my save just before passing through the relay and any of those three would die occasionally depending on how I shuffled them around (not doing anything stupid like putting Samara as a tech specialist or something). All of them were loyal and I had talked to them a lot, but not quite finished all of the talking possible. Legion would die if I made him do the tech specialist thing, Thane would die if I left him behind to hold the line, etc.

I'm sure it's this because after loading from that save a few times I decided to take the time to talk to those characters, and they ALL survived after going through the same motions but with more chatted up crew. I think not having fully talked to them still leaves you with a low chance of having them die.

i think it helps to leave 1 or two of the "leader" characters with the people who are holding the doors while you fight the boss.

It truly baffles my mind why the official guide did not have indepth coverage like this topic is trying to provide for free.

I don't know about fully talking them up. I didn't fully talk to Thane, Samara, Legion, or Mordin. I had about 1 dialogue option left for them. Everyone lived for me.

But the talking-stuff still doesn`t explain why changing the last squad influences the survival rate of the door-team.

And Zaeed, who you can't talk to at all, has no problem with surviving at all.

I think we can exclude the talking-to-characters as a relevant factor.

Upgrades too, because there are people who managed to get the whole team out without the individual upgrades.

It all depends on the composition of the final squad, and this is replicable. Certain combinations lead to certain deaths of characters.

We can even recognize a pattern who is treated as "victim" by the game:

- most of the time the X-factor kills mordin

- second: Jack

I can see a pattern: non-fighters die.

I`ve never read that Legion, Jacob, Garrus or Grunt dies at the last door.

I did the very last part, which is quite big actually since they don't bloody well let you save after the last place the biotic specialist stops. Played them almost exactly the same, in one Mordin dies in the other he doesn't. Only differences were:

Mordin Dies:

1. Used Samara/Miranda.

2. Kept the base intact.

Mordin Doesn't Die:

1. Used Garrus/Miranda.

2. Destroyed the base.

Not sure if either of those have something to do with, or overall time taken from the point you leave everyone at the door. I was definitely faster in the one where Mordin lived.

It would be interesting to know if everybody was loyal and who was left for defending the door.

Just finished my playthrough. I did all loyalty and side missions before heading into the Omega 4 Relay.

Samara: Biotic Specialist

Mordin: Crew Escort

Garrus: Leadership

Legion: Tech Specialist

Normandy Upgrades: All

Everyone survived.

Okay, this is my first playthrough experience. All the squaddies were loyal and I had all the Normandy upgrades (shields, Thanix gun and Silaris armor) and squadmate prototypes. All the time (from the Oculus attack to the end) I had Thane and Grunt with me.

I sent Mordin through the vents and he got shot in the face while closing the door. RIP Professor, I'll miss you.

I, however, also sent Jacob as the leader of the first fireteam and they survived.

Then I found the crew and everyone except Chakwas and some others died. I was devastated because I had lost Kelly (who I was romancing).

I chose Zaeed to escort the crew (everyone made it), Samara to shield me against the Seekers and Tali to be the leader of the second fireteam (yeah, I was that confused).
Obviously she got her ticket punched. Meh, I'm only gonna miss her hips. Never liked her very much for some odd reason.

Everyone else survived, although I did come close to fainting for a second when I saw Thane fall through the rubble and then him and Grunt under the debris.

Based on what I've read here and my own experience it seems Garrus is the best choice for leader both the first and second time (assuming he's loyal).

It's odd though, the first time I picked Samara as the squad leader and Miranda commented how it was an excellent choice. However, it always resulted in the tech dying while closing the gate (used both Legion and Talia w/ the same result). When I picked Garrus she just said, "well at least he knows what he's doing."

So here are my scenarios:

All loyal, ship fully upgraded:

First try:

Tech: Legion (used Talia on second try w/ other parameters the same, Talia died)
First leader: Samara
My squad: Miranda and Jack
Result: Legion dies

Escort: Garrus
Result: no casualties

Biotic: Jack
Team: Grunt and Miranda
Second leader: Zaed
Result: Zaed dies

Final squad selection: Miranda and Jack
Result: no casualties

These are my settings for when everyone survived:

Tech: Legion
First Leader: Garrus
My squad: Miranda and Jack
Escort: Jacob
Biotic: Jack
Second leader: Garrus
Second squad: Miranda and Grunt
Last squad: Miranda and Jack
