Based on what I've read here and my own experience it seems Garrus is the best choice for leader both the first and second time (assuming he's loyal).

It's odd though, the first time I picked Samara as the squad leader and Miranda commented how it was an excellent choice. However, it always resulted in the tech dying while closing the gate (used both Legion and Talia w/ the same result). When I picked Garrus she just said, "well at least he knows what he's doing."

Probably the default dialog - I imagine she says that no matter what you pick.

In any case, if it helps, my team where everyone survived (all were loyal):

Tech: Tali
Leader 1 & 2: Garrus
Biotic: Samara
Escort: Jacob
Team for last boss: Miranda & Mordin

I don't remember any of my other teams too well, but I tend to use Mordin a lot because Incinerate is awesome vs. armor :)

No, like I just said in what you quoted above, she only said "well at least he knows what he's doing" when I picked Garrus, so it's not the same no matter what you pick.

Hahaha, I'm absolutely atrocious with names, one of my friends that also has this game was completely flabergasted at my inability to remember all of their names correctly.

Can anyone clarify that if I use Miranda as biotic shield, a current squad member still gets killed? Also, is it random which one dies?

You need to take the best person for the job. Miranda is not the best person for this particular job.
Whenever you take the wrong person for a job, leading, shielding or hacking, there will be deaths. These deaths are probably random, although it seems Mordin usually bites the bucket first.

Tali and Legion are good hackers. The others are not.
Jack and Samara are powerful biotics. The others are not. (Jack is the most powerful, in my opinion.)
Miranda and Garrus are your best choice for picking team leaders (although Jacob works too from what I hear).

Ok, so here is how my game ended. Jack and Zaeed died, which was okay I guess since I never really liked them.

However, after I defeated the final boss, it showed Mordin dead. I know this was touched on in the first post, but I wanted to check back and see if anyone found what causes this. He was loyal to me, and I upgraded his omni-tool. I was also a Paragon if that makes any difference. What causes this to happen? I'd like to know for later playthroughs when I try to keep everyone alive.

Someone mentioned something about leaving a person behind that was a soldier (could use assault rifles).  Not sure if it's true or not, but this is what I did.

Jack, Zaeed, Miranda, and Jacob were the only ones alive (all loyal) when I headed to the final boss battle.  First time I brought Zaeed and Miranda, after the battle Jack was lying dead in a cutscene.   Retried and brought Miranda and jack, everyone made it out alive.  Don't know if it was because Zaeed could use assault rifles or if the Collectors just hate Jack.

Other than this I have no clue.  My first playthrough, everyone was loyal and survived until the end where Mordin was dead in a cutscene just like in your playthrough.  I just sent him back with the crew so he wouldn't die.

but miranda failed to hold the barrier and thane got taken away by the bugs

affter beating boss for some reason there was a swarm of collectors surrounding mordins body- no idea why

Miranda is a horrible biotic compared to Jack and Samara. She lacks strength in that department.
After crew members start dying there seems to be a higher chance for more deaths, due to less people to watch eachothers' backs.

It's all pretty logical.:)

I had everyone pull through, and did it without spoilers

Vents-not a hard call you need tech- I sent Legion-Shepard Commander shows his trus

Leader(both)-again not hard to figure out-Garrus redemption/passing the torch

Barrier-Again not hard-Jack were told she is the best biotic/Shep shows his trust

I had Tali and Thane in my party, no one died. Also has anyone though of this, maybe the Paragon Interupt on Mordin's loyalty quest has some influence?

Does landing on a planet count as a mission for the end game purpose?  I decided to go to Ilos to purchase another upgrade and wanted to know if that was a mistake for getting all crew members to survive.

So, now it`s clear that Mordin's survival depends entirely on your last squad. Change your squad, Mordin survives.

The only thing we still don't know: what is the internal logic behind it? There is no obvious pattern, besides that when you have Garrus in your final squad, Mordin is dead almost for sure.

I'm about to start the Reaper IFF mission. Saved Jack's loyalty mission for last so that I could aquire as many paragon points as possible, but it still wasn't enough, I chose miranda in the fight and Jack's disloyal, can't change her mind when talking to her either. There are no more quests or assignments I can do now, so I'm wondering, will there be situations where you can aquire paragon points when starting the reaper IFF mission? I rly want Jack loyal Image IPB

This is interesting. It must be based on the number of paragon or renegade points you earn AFTER you've chosen irregardless of how many you already have. Even if your maxed out, you still need to go earn a set amount before you can talk them around. If yoúr out of missions, then there's no way I guess.

This happened to me (and is why my whole crew died) I delayed going through the Omega relay cause I wanted to get their loyalty back. I was already maxed out on Paragon but still had some missions I could do. After doing them all, going back to check if they would talk to me each time, she finally gave in and became loyal again. I earned about 20 paragon points in that time.

Alas, I had no idea that running around trying to get in favor with the cow would see my whole crew slaughtered... B*&CH!

I never changed my squad at the end and he lived.

So what the hell happened in mine, I had all loyalty quests done when I went to Reaper IFF, I got back, activated and talked to Legion and got his loyalty mission (did not travel anywhere). Collectors showed up when I went to fly to Legion's loyalty mission, so I had to take shuttle to Legions loyalty mission. When I got back I went straight from there to the relay. My crew got juiced.

So are we sure you can do one mission after Reaper IFF?

Very good guide, thanks ^^.

That explains, why I can't do a perfect survivor run despite having only 4 unloyal crew members.

It's my lack of a loyal suitable biotic.

I tried loyal Miranda first, but then a random team member acompanying Shep died.

Sadly, both Jack and Samara weren't loyal, so again a random member gets killed.

I had Garrus in my final squad and everyone survived.
I guess we won't figure this out unless someone manages to infiltrate some game files and see what's what. ^_^

I find it interesting that so many people have Mordin die, yet I played two times so far and it never happened to me.

all loyal

all ship upgrades

almost all weapon upgrades

all team member personal upgrades, and misc. team upgrades (except 1krogan vitality)

almost all shep upgrades

fire-team leader: Garus (both times)

tech: legion

biotic: Samara

escort: thane (because he is sneaky  )

saved the whole crew:happy:

my party first half: samara, tali

my party second half, and end boss: tali, grunt

did NOT say we should hurry. gave full paragon speach

shot injection tubes, calld team holding the line, legion gets shot and falls but is ok.

told illusive man to shove it.

nuked 75% of human reapers health, then killed him.... in the eye.;)

booked it back to the ship

lived happily ever after with full squad and crew.

Just did another test run:  jumped through every relay on the map, burned through several thousand units of fuel, landed on every story world (Omega, Illium, Tuchanka, Citadel) , talked to NPC's and shopped.  The entire crew was still alive at the Collector base.

I think it's pretty safe to say that only missions completed will count against you.

Did you then complete Legion's mission after the Joker level on the Normandy?  That counts as your one mission, so half your crew will die.

Now, what I can't explain is why the Collectors showed up as you were going to Legion's mission.  Are you sure you didn't accidentally finish other sidequests, no matter how small?
