Just don't select any disloyal squad members to do anything, just send Mordin back with the survivors if he's loyal, its usually him that dies when he holds the line.

A disloyal Mordin, however, doesn't seem to be able to survive under any circumstances.

*Problem w/ this one*

I've sent in both these guys & they die (side note: I have everyone loyal & have all upgrades). i'm going to try & send Garrus again as leader. A lot of other sites suggest this is best. Just in case people are having the same problem.

Oh yea if u guys keep getting Mordin killed at the end, send him w/ escort so he lives.

i sent zaeed back as he was an "extra" character, si i didn't think that would make any difference, i probably took mordin (loyal as was everyone) with me and samara for the final battle, miranda leading the cover team and everyone survived.

In two play thrus so far I'v had two different results.

1st playthru I used Garus, then Miranda for the team leaders, sent thane back with the crew (only half were alive), used Jack and Samara for the final fight with Legion as the tech specialist, and Samara the biotic. No one dies.

2nd playthru I used only Garus as the leader, sent thane back with the crew (all of which were alive), used Samara and Grunt in the final fight, used Legion as the tech specialist, and Samara as the biotic. Mordin died in the holding action.

The tech development for the squad between the two games was more or less identical. The only obvious difference was the lack of the second geth shielding tech advance. Otherwise the differences were cosmetic but all critical advances were present in the two play throughs: squad health +50%, tech&biotic duration and power boosts, etc. All weapons between c&e. All personal upgrades done and everyone loyal.

The only significant difference I can see between 1 and 2 was Grunt in the final battle.

Yup in first playthrough you had 2 of your main squishies in the final battle, in the 2nd you only had 1, thus lowering Mordin's chances of survival, basically if you are taking Mordin with you past the meeting with the crew, instead of using him as their escort, you have to ensure you go into the final battle with your squishy types rather than any of the tough nuts. Either that or put him in the final battle team himself.

If Grunt is not holding the line but instead fighting the boss with you, it's more likely that Mordin will die. He seems to have the highest "score" for holding the line and if he's not there the chances of Mordin's survival drop drasticaly. However I also used Grunt in the final fight once but with Tali, this means that Samara has quite a high value in the line holding action (higher than Tali obviuosly). And the squad can hold with no casualities without Grunt ONLY IF you take out a relativly weak character like Tali.

The difference was I was a soldier first play through and infiltrator the second so I wanted some fire support but reading the post a few days back that points to the bioware post on the subject I see the logic to Grunt being a bad choice. I was thinking to take Mordin with me this time round (as an adept)...area freeze is very useful against the drones, as the logic for using Thane as escort is solid (regardless of the game effect).

Hard to consider Samara as "squishy" she was my ace in the hole against Harbinger...Reave the barrier down, then incineration blast and reave usually did him in. Also between area concussive blast and area throw a lot of those fights pre-embryo-reaper were over quick...unfortunately that left me a tad short of heat clips for my Widow.

But from now on I leave Grunt with the hold the line group. I am glad it is for a sensible reason rather than some timer...if you don't kill the embryo-reaper in 3 min 30 sec we start killing your team mates or random check.

Well regardless, Shepard is saving the galaxy for humanity...one (or more) aliens at a time. The half filled Normandy hurt a lot more than Mordin...not that Mordin's loss wasn't a kick in the quads but it was a lot easier to deal with then wandering about a half filled ship.

I chose these people in my 1st playthrough.

Tech: Legion
Biotic: Jack
1st Squad Leader: Zaeed
2nd Squad Leader: Miranda
Escort: Jacob
Final Battle Team: Garrus and Tali

Legion was killed. My second time through everything was the same except Garrus was squad leader instead of Zaeed and Legion made it through. Also I used Garrus and Legion in the final battle.

The only thing I do not understand is Jacob being a lead squad member. There's no reason behind this, he's a hired gun, a soldier. From what we know from the game he usualy or allways works under someone (never had a chance to play Galaxies, so I don't know about those events). But considering his past and his loyality mission - he's not suitable for leadership. I wouldn't send a guy who saw his father going on a powerrage, raping degenerated woman and killing his co-workers, with experience like that I would be woried that he might snap during the mission and get everyone killed. On the other hand that could have given him additional determination but still I wouldn't risk with him even if I like him.

Also, he lead the security on the Cerberus base where the Lazarus project took place.

I guess, it was a hint for him being a not-that-bad leader.

Anyways, knowing this, I still didn't think about choosing him, only after reading about it.

Just finished my renegade run. Grunt stayed in his tank, Legion was handed over to Cerberus for the bounty. With an upgraded ship and loyal crew, Tali as tech, Garrus as fireteam leader (both times), Morinth as biotic specialist, Mordin as escort, and Miranda and Garrus in my squad for the final fight, everyone survived.

I have a question about the biotic.

I know that having a bad biotic (anyone but Jack or Samara) will result in a fizzle that kills your second party member. But what if I take Samara or Jack, and whichever one it is happens to be disloyal? Would the biotic die, or would I lose a squaddie to the fizzle?

Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for this!  See, I didn't need help on keeping everyone alive, I think it's common sense and easy, what I was having trouble with is playing through and "picking" certain squad members to die.  So far Samara and Zaeed can go (sorry you two, nothing personal ... sorta, i just don't like you).  Just wanted a more "cliched-movie like" ending.

Anyways, thx again!

Took Mordin with me on the final boss fight. He survived.
It might have been by chance thought... I don't really know.
He was Loyal btw.

You would lose a squaddie to the fizzle.

It'd be awesome if a disloyal Miranda turned on you there but it's doubtful.

She does the same thing, sadly.

I may as well point out that ME Wiki says Garrus is a good choice to leave behind to hold the line.

Also, if both active squad members die, does Shepard die as well?  Or do all of the characters have to die?

hm, didn't read this until after I completed my first run, and i'm proud to say nobody died :D

miranda was the only one not loyal, and I got the big 3 upgrades for the normandy (gun, shield, plating)

also worth noting I hadn't installed Zaed, so take him out of the equation.

Tubes- Legion. I think I got one of his character-specific upgrades, but that was all.

Fire team leader- Garrus both times. He just seemed like the natural choice to me. He got shot when closing the door at the second rendezvous, but it didn't seem to bother him :D

sent jacob back with the crew. none of the crew died either.

biotic barrier- jack. was on the fence about her or samara, but I kinda randomly chose jack. her dialogue when doing this is a little out of character though :/

I took thane and jack with me for the final boss, and we kicked serious booty. I was an Infiltrator and I went mostly paragon for the whole game, got a few upgrades, but not THAT many,

I'm on the fence about how to do my second playthrough though. I kinda want to see some death scenes now.

I had jack die after the boss fight. I think it was that same random scene that mbp310 mentions, except jack was lying there dead. May be because I didn't have enough persuasion points in the Miranda Jack conflict or because my shotgun wasn't fully upgraded. Not sure though.

If you took Jack with you to the final boss fight, she'll die if she's not loyal to you. Otherwise, if she was on the defense, you have run into the "Hold the Line" equation. This thread goes into a bit more detail.

For my team I had:

Sheppard Squad: Grunt and Kasumi

Vent: Tali

1st and 2nd Fire team: Garrus

Escort: Mordin

Biotic: Samara

100% Survival

Had every upgrade except two weapon upgrades and two health upgrades.

Btw, being an infiltrator is the easiest class. Headshot anyone? The Widow sniper rifle dominates everything. Harbinger dies in one hit every time if you have max sniper upgrades with a perfect headshot. I think only the Cain and Arc Projector can boast more efficient killing than the upgraded Widow.

I HAD EVERYONE LOYAL IN THEIR RESPECTIVE POSITIONS AND TALI DIES ON INSANITY??

How in the hell does that happen!? Did I take someone in my final squad for the boss that I shouldn't have?
