Yes he can tank, I wouldn't know though since I use him as DPS.

He can indeed tank. He is very versatile, he has a DPS set of abilities, a tank set, and an interesting buff set which essentially takes his out of the picture but buffs the rest of your party in just about every way possible. He's a very interesting character.

Excellent. I was a little curious myself. I don't think Alistair will like me for long. Which is a slight shame since I think he's terribly swell.

Shale should be more comftorable with my party.

I hear about people using him for DPS and tanking, but does anyone use him for his buffing talents? That's a very interesting power set and I'm wondering if it's useful and if I would need to have a main tank with it.

I'd imagine you would need still need a damage sponge even with his buff ability on, if only because it makes the buffs that much more useful. Buffing the whole party a little bit but without a focal point for healing and rebuffing is probably not very effective, as the squishy mages should still go down fairly quickly.

I'm curious about having him use his tanking abilities to begin the fight, getting all of the aggression from the monsters, then switching to his buff mode and giving out those nice buffs while the enemies whack him. It would take a higher level but I suspect it would work.

Yeah, a tank would probably still be necessary, which is an issue, because I need Morrigan, but I'm still trying to get Leilana to sleep with me. Problems, problems. Of course, if the buffs don't make enough difference to justify their use, I suppose it would make more sense to just have him tank. Anyone have any idea of the numbers here? Are the buffs very minor like 10% or more significant?

Could work. Of course, he couldn't maintain his threaten in his stone aura, and when in stone aura, he would be vulnerable to damage with his decreased defense, though with higher levels of that power set, he also reduces enemy damage, so ultimately he probably wouldn't gain or lose much, but I imagine it would be something like depending on his stats alone without any buffs to tanking ability.

Shale is a lifesaver on hard difficulty, just start pumping constitution to get hit for 1-7 damage by regular guys. Alistair just gets one shot :(

His defensive tree (stoneheart) with the right crystals will make him the best tank (that I've seen so far around level 20).
