I recently finished my first playthrough of Mass Effect 2, and thought I’d share my thoughts on some aspects of the game. Overall, the game improves on everything (at least in my eyes.) Spoilers.

Prologue: Shorter and more interesting than the prologue to the first game. I only hope that the third game will allow changes to the Normandy and Shepard’s face and class without killing them both again, because that would be redundant.

Mini-Games: Hacking, Bypassing, and Mining are far better than the time-consuming driving and button-pushing of the first game. Some people don’t like the new planet scanning, but I like it. My only complaint is that the scanning is too slow at first. If this game comes back, the scanner shouldn’t have to be upgraded to move at an endurable pace.

Inventory and Upgrades: Some people dislike the loss of an inventory screen, but I think this is a strength of ME2. Armor and Weapons can only be swapped out at certain places, and this makes sense. I wish that “Casual” clothing could be tinted, but the inventory system fits the game. Upgrades and new weapons bring some needed variety to weapons, and are implemented well. I saw someone complain about how some “upgraded” weapons have less ammo than the weaker versions, so my only suggestion is that the description of each weapon explains the differences (ammo capacity, rate of fire, damage.)

The Team: The story was said to be about the squadmates and it shows. I am glad that each team member has their own perspective, history, and combat skills. The fact that every team member had a specialized mission was also an improvement on the first game.

Choices: I can’t say much that wasn’t said by the developers. I felt like my choices mattered, choices I didn’t expect to come back had an impact on the story in ways I wasn’t prepared for. I appreciate the work that went into making player choices matter in Mass effect.

Joker: I was amazed at the addition of Joker’s solo mission. I can’t express in words how much I liked the mission to save the Normandy. My only question is: was Joker affected by being sealed in the Drive Core with Element Zero? I thought his bones were less brittle after being exposed to “Eezo” because he later uses an assault rifle (when his bio on the mass effect web site says doing so would break his arm.) It never was confirmed in the game, so I thought that might be interesting to explain in ME3.

Romances: Much better than the first game. Because each member of the group must be earned, and their loyalty is only gained through personal missions, I felt like I knew each character better than I did in ME1. I just hope that most of the surviving team members, especially the romantic interests, are part of the team in ME3, and that their stories continue in the third game.

Overall, Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I've every played. It combines RPG story and advancement and choices with the combat of a shooter.
