Honestly, considering about half the original ME characters ARE also ME2 squad mates, it doesn't seem to be as many potential squad members as one would think. We have the four original survivors of ME (two of which went with in two) which actually only leaves eight (not counting DLC) in ME2. And in ME2 it is possible to not pick up a few of the dossiers or not open or activate things (Grunt/Legion). The only real "required" NPCs seem to be Mordin, Jacob and Miranda for plot reasons.
Also, if I may point out, ME was conceived as a trilogy, which implies that the Bioware Me development team probably had a plan on how the choices were going to pan out in a general way. Doesn't mean things can't change, but I don't think the survivors of the collector base are going to just be tossed, especially old friends from ME1.
Didnt even think about that, considering the few characters, that were user choice as to whether or not they would even be active in ME2 I dont see why people act as if bioware cant possibly include characters that "could be dead". It wouldnt require any major overhauls to the game to account for. its not as if, for example, Miranda being dead or alive is going to change everything in the game. You just wouldnt be able to talk/develop a relationship with them or maybe do a side mission associated with them. Again no "extra" work on biowares part., the user just gets less content because they were too lazy to save their crew.
Actually the only characters that require "extra" work on biowares part are where two characters are interchangeable, i.e. Ashley/kaiden. Since all things being equal they cant ever be in the game at the same time.
So its not like if miranda died, bioware has to create an enitrely new character with new dialogue to replace her, you just simply dont get her.
