On this board and across many others people are reporting intermittent sound cutouts with many driver version, various sound cards and on different OSs.

Even some reviews mentioned sound cutting out among the few bugs their testers encountered.

What's the most aggravating thing about the issue is that it has already been in ME1 and never been fixed. Some folks then found walkarounds by changing the game .ini or disabling the sound card's hardware aceeleraton (a thing NOT possible under Vista or Win7). No such thing for ME2 yet...

So what we affected are stuck with is a game that looks fantastic, runs perfectly well and crash free, and is silent half of the time. Kinda completely kills the game actually.

In my case the sound just vanishes at random intevals and comes back after a few seconds (or minutes), usually woth some garbled noise before going back to normal.

And, yes, drivers are all recent (installed friday in fact), both cards (SB X-Fi extreme gamer and Realtek onboard HD sound) are affected (usually, the onboard sound is disabled in BIOS). Need I mention that all other games run fine and do so ALL of the time?

So, how about at least listing this in the known issues section and finally accnowledging it (don't know if this was ever even accknowledged for ME1...).
And then, perhaps, come up with a sound solution that works ALL of the time, not just half of it?

Would really be appreciated...

Oh, and as an afterthought: a tech support forum without a search function is really beyond useless...

Well, it should be early Monday morning in Edmonton by now, so jolly good morning.

I - and probably everyone affected - would still like an answer.

Better yet - a solution ?

For a problem that sounds suspiciously like an encore of THIS ancient one:

So, where are those config files hidden in ME2?

Start the Mass Effect 2 launcher and go towards the bottom. There will be an option to configure your sound and sound hardware. Make sure it matches your home PC setup. It looks like it defaulted to 5.1 since my motherboard has a 5.1 output, but I don't have 5.1 setup in Windows. Once it was set correctly in the ME2 launcher, my sound issues went away.

It looks like the config utility is actually the CAUSE of the problem (see that old ME1 bug report linked above that describes the very same issue 2 years ago)

Setting to 5.1. or to stereo, reconfiguring the soundcard, changing the sample rate (up to 24 bit and 96.000Hz or down to 16 bit and 44100Hz), disabling EAX and Creative 3D effects all do not do a thing.

I would try to manually change the config file, but it's not the same as in ME1 and I havent found the new file yet...
