Okay, so bear with me here. I downloaded Mass Effect 2 on Steam. My computer surpasses all recommended specs. I download it, install it, and..."Failed to initialize physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the physx system software installed."

That basically told me I bought a game I couldn't play. On Steam. Honestly? That's the biggest load of BS I have ever encountered. It's because I have an ATI 4850, and since NVIDIA owns Physx, I guess I can't play it, right? Yeah right. Is there any way I can play this game? I don't have the installation discs, as I downloaded it on steam, so doing what others suggested on this board is kapoot. So can I fix this? or did I spend 50 bucks on this game just to look at the installer? Seriously, this is a travesty.

Hmm... I bought it on Steam too, but that was after exchanging the physical copy for a couple other games. I can't even play ME 1, Crysis, or this. I've got a feeling I'm going to end up doing something I'll regret if I can't get it to work with the External Vid Card I'm going to be getting soon.

Well, as I've been told, I'm supposed to take the actual download and place it where the installer's is, which is in the steamapps/common/mass effect 2/redist folder

I have an ATI radeon 4850 and I had no problem with it, however when downloading it I did accidently close out of the directX update and it corrupted the whole install.

I vote reinstall OP

it has nothing to do with steam. Just the version of physx the game is looking for.

go into your steamapps\\common\\bioware\\mass effect 2\\redist folder

run the physx distributable there. If it prompts you to uninstall physx let it. Then run it again and it should install the version its looking for.

Done and done

This worked for me: I had another version of physx installed that came with another game. I've uninstalled it from control panel and re-installed ME2. Hope it works.
