This is a problem that I've been trying to figure out for almost three days now. It's pissed me off very much, but I'll do my best to push my attitude aside.

Problem:
Whenever I start Mass Effect 2, I see the Bioware logo movie play, but at some time during it's playback (at seemingly random times with every try), the sound stops abruptly and begins looping the same half-second of sound again and again as if the game crashed. However, the movie continues playing as normal until it's finished, then I'm simply treated with a blank black screen with the sound continuing to loop until I'm forced to bring up task manager and manually terminate the process (i'm lucky enough to have two screens, so I put the task manager on one screen and the game on another so I can mouse over to it when it inevitably does this.)
This problem started happening non stop 3 days ago. The game is now completely unplayable. I have absolutely no idea what could have caused it. I've installed no games, made no modifications, and made no changes to either my system, steam, or the game since I bought it on release.

My copy of ME2 is the digital deluxe release on steam that I pre-ordered.

System specs:
Nvidia 8800 GTS video card, 256 MB VRAM.
2GB RAM, Kingston.
Intel E6750 duo core, 2.66 Ghz.
Windows XP Proffessional SP3.

Solutions I have tried, seperately from another, as to potentially isolate the problem:
-Disabled one screen.
-Emptied both my windows temporary folder and my documents temporary.
-Turned down or turned off audio hardware acceleration.
-Turned off sound via ME2 configuration utility.
-System restore to before this problem began.
-Completely re-installed ME2, all DLC, and system restored.
-Disabled every single background process.
-Checked physical contact points of the hardware in my computer, including both hard drives.
-Checked Avast antivirus and firewall to see if anything is being blocked. Invcluding disabling them temporarily.
-Moved all ME2 movie files from the directory and tried again.

All of these have yielded absolutely no result.
If I move/delete the movie files and go straight to the start screen, I'm treated with a nearly Identical problem. The sound plays as usual, but as soon as I press anything at the "press any key" screen, I hear the initial sound, then the game moves for a few frames, and locks completely, with the audio still playing. After about a minute the game will advance a few more frames and then stop again, but I havn't the patiance to wait for it to zoom back  out of the debris and go to the menu screen.

I have no idea what the problem can possibly be. It can't even be a virus, as I havn't even touched firefox or my internet since I bought ME2. I have enough security on my computer, including a firewall and a heavily fortified NAT, to rule that out.

Does anybody have any idea what's causing this? Everything was absolutely fine until this happened. The game looks far superior to ME1, yet I'm having exceptionally better frame-rates dispite my aging system and the obvious increase in graphical quality. The game runs completely smooth regardless.

You posted your system specs regarding an audio problem and left out the audio portion of the information... Do tell. ;)

Also, before we continue, please register your game.

Audio? Well, the audio is on-board my gigabyte motherboard. Realtek HD Audio.

And, alright. I just registered.

What version of the Realtek HD audio driver do you have installed?

5.10.0.5485

I realize that this is dastardly out-of-date, as it is dated as sometime in 2007. I could have sworn I updated it a month ago, though. I wonder what happened.

Sounds like you pointed yourself in the right direction. I believe the latest driver for your onboard sound is R2.41 dated January 22, 2010.

Cheers

Well it may a symptom and not a cause. What we did with the above drivers, let's do for the others.

First, install the latest directx:

...then video and chipset are the big ones. BIOS if you're feeling plucky and I mean very plucky.

If still no-joy, post up your dxdiag-- we'll see what we see.

I made sure of updating directx at around the time I toyed with the sound acceleration (via the dxdiag tool). I assure you those are up-too-date.

Hold on, I found some other audio drivers from Gigabyte that seem to be different than the ones I found previous, as the only drivers I found with the date you gave me are for vista or windows 7. Different in that they seem more up-too-date and/or more suited for my motherboard configuration. I'll post back with any results.

alright, no dice so far. I have in fact updated my BIOS a few months ago, if that means something.

You want me to post my whole dxdiag text information? It's a rather big file in terms of room it will take on a page, is there a way I can attach it to my message?

Awesome mate. I had a feeling it may have been DirectX. So glad it worked out for you and you can finally enjoy the game. What's great is that it is a remedy that you can apply in all your future gaming endeavors.

Cheers mate,

Chan
