DAO!

I'm not an action gamer, so the further the Mass Effect series goes in the direction of an action game, the less likely I am to pick it up.

In terms of polish, ME2 looks very nice. And from what I hear, importing a character from ME1 triggers plot consequences for major choices you made in the original, which I find very cool.

Let it be known that I'm going to MURDER the council if I ever get the chance again.
For now I must wait . . . I was on my way to rescue Tali when my Xbox 360 finally red ringed and died.

I'm not suprised, it's been acting bizzare lately and I knew it was only a matter of time.

As for the thread topic, so far I prefer ME to DAO but that opinion is somewhat skewed because I've played DAO to death and have not finished ME2 because I literally played it to death.

ME for me. Better characters, better story and the game felt like a huge step forward wheras DA:O felt like a step back. And I more of a sci-fi fan than fantasy.

ME2 ... we'll see.

DAO is a great rpg game and even innovative in some ways, but in the end as much as I love that game it is still just another medieval rpg. I have played through ME1, AND ME2 and it is a rpg/action/shotter with a mix of star trek or star wars depending on which side of the Si Fi spectrum you are on. I love the ME games great story, very innovative in every way, combat system is deep and rich, voice acting and graphics are top notch, and the ability to import old saves you can't beat.

Also after beating the game you can go anywhere in your ship and finish up quests you may have missed which is nice something Bioware should have done with DAO. I never had problems with the face i went with the default face, and my old save from ME1, and after a bit in the game you can get a plastic surgery machine for med bay to eliminate all the scarring and such.

Overall they are both great games. Mass Effect 1,2 are just a different, and unique type of game you will either love or hate.

Mass Effect 2 has very little replay incentive, that, and the insensitivity of your party members and lack of any meaningful dialogue could make it's popularity short lived.

Where as Dragon age Origins will live on forever and ever.

Well they are very different, considering many factors, but as far as I can tell I enjoyed ME1 the most, than comes DAO and ME2, as mentioned above, I couldnt bring myself into ME2 for second time.

DAO is miles ahead of ME1. Hell, I don't even remember what happened in ME1, I even deleted my save lol. Which is sad because I just got my copy of ME2 today. :D

Waiting for the extra content to download so I can play.. woohoo...

hh truth is that I don´t really remember what happend in ME1, either, but than, I found it better anger ventilation than DA, but still it depends.

Im more to action style of playing, like kamikazee, so I´ve often found myslef lyiong on the floor while playing DA, while in ME all you need to do is aim a good headshot :) But I miss non-scoped rifles there :)

ME2 makes a lot of leaps forward as far as presentation and cleaner game mechanics in a lot of places (inventory being the top of the list). Combat....well I'm not a shooter guy so while it works it ain't my favorite.

I don't think the story hangs together as well - you spend most of the game gathering your allies and not stopping the threat to the galaxy. ME1 had a much better paced story in terms of unfurling mystery and drawing you in. DAO has by far the better set of NPC's and my attachment to them is a lot higher than anyone in ME1 or 2,

Dragon Age, hands down.

Mass Effect 1 was a brilliant, inspired piece of work. I found the world in which it was set believable and tangible; and that to me makes a story. It's why George R.R. Martin’s work, in my opinion, is as good as Tolkien’s - the worlds which they have crafted are fleshed out and feel real. But after playing though Mass Effect 2 I honestly feel it is the weaker instalment, and to me, it has cheapened and tarnished what Mass Effect was.

I can't put my finger on what it was exactly that did it. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the stereotypical characters, the linear gameplay, the horrid blatant semi-fourth-wall-breaking fan service, and the out of place final chapter in the story all played a massive part in me falling out of love with the Mass Effect universe. It was quite a disappointment.

Dragon Age is, however, a new IP. David Gaider and the writers seem to be very committed to creating a real, believable, living world for us to explore and take part in. The setting is fleshed out and feels tangible; and to me, that makes a better game - especially one that's a Role Playing Game.

Really different games

Dao is a traditional rpg, with story, big focus on characters and relationships

Me is an action game with some rpg elements great focus on action

Both are great games but are part of different genres

I don't see a reason to pick one or the other. I play one a while, then play the other a while, then go back to the first. They're drastically different games, after all, and for me that helps keep them both fresh.

I think that, if the dlc plans of both franchises come fully to fruition, that we might be in a golden age for RPG gaming, with BioWare releasing significant new content for each game every 6 months or so (which, since we're talking about two games, really means staggered, so every 3 months or so...) until the next game in each series arrives.

All that without even knowing what they're going to bring to the table with The Old Republic.

Fortunately I do not have to choose ME or DAO but can instead play both. I prefer DAO's style of gaming but I do have a soft spot for ME. I hope both franchises continue to be strong and Bioware fans continue to buy both.

I would have answered with the traditional fence sitting as well, however, it's not what the original poster asked. He, or she, was asking which you prefer - not which you'd play if you could only play one or the other.

Yes well I have to admit there is already a great deal of bad blood going on between conservative RPG fans who don't like Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 2 fans over there on their board and last thing I want is to continue that rather pointless debate over here and create a DAO vs. Mass Effect thing.

Yeah, too true. No need to turn this thread in to one of those. You're right; one should be able to enjoy both equally, and besides, the genres are too different to compare fairly.

And my answer is I prefer them both.  I think they're both the highlights of gaming from recent years.  I see ME as a sort of spiritual successor to KotOR, and the kind of action RPG that game introduced to me, and DA:O as the best isometric RPG in the 10 years since the BG franchise ended.  It's like asking me to choose brownies or fudge; I'm taking both every time.

Personally, I think ME2 is one of the best movies I have ever played. I'm always waiting to see what that wacky Commander Shepard is going to do next (seriously...Paragon interrupts that involve threatening cops and accidentally hitting on someone when you meant to say "Yes, that would help me out if you'd do that" are pretty wacky.)

DA is one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

Also, I find the combat in ME2 pretty boring (it mostly involves spamming warp/overload and going for headshots), while I found the combat in DA more in-depth (though still too easy.)

Still....ME2 is awfully pretty to look at. And the story seems pretty decent so far (I'm ~23 hours in, every companion but 1, and I've only done 1 loyalty mission.)
