Yeah, too true. No need to turn this thread in to one of those. You're right; one should be able to enjoy both equally, and besides, the genres are too different to compare fairly.

This. I'm not sure it's fair to compare them anyway since they are as different as night and day.

Although I must say that ME2 is more stable on my machine and ME2 has better graphics I have more fun with DA:O. The party members of DA:O offer better customization of both skills and equipment. You can also take your time with DA:O without worrying about missing content. Unlike ME2 you can start the final quest when you did all available side quests or whenever you feel like. In my first ME2 playthrough I tried to build my team before the final missions kicked in, but I reached the point of no return without doing even 1% of the side quests. I knew that team wasn't strong enough, so I aborted the game and I am trying again. If only I knew what triggered that point of no return. So, if this happens this time I will drop ME2 altogether. ME2 also forced me to play the character against its personality. Some of the characters from ME1 that were brought back in ME2 are not connected in any way. Garrus is a good example. The role he plays in ME2 would have been believable if only I didn't try to convince him to be paragon in ME1. It's full of those things. Sigh. I am trying to finish the game, but currently I am very disappointed.

Yeah I was sort of disappointed in him.  He totally regressed to vigilanteism.

They're both about equally trope-y, but nothing in Mass Effect affects me, except negatively, because to me it's just a bunch of egos rampaging through the galaxy. And that doesn't mean that I don't like strong characters in games, just the tone of Mass Effect, although I think they were trying to get at something better.

Honestly I really enjoyed both although I wouldn't mind if they finished ME3 and switched to a different universe - I would love to see them try like a 1930's or present day RPG - something like Cthulhu...

The Mass Effect trilogy and DAO are totally different but still fantastic in their own way.

I REALLY like the aesthetics to Mass Effect.  Everything just looks visually more appealing.  I also adore the new tweaks to the action. It turned into the shooter Gears Of War was trying to be minus the velcro on the walls or anything else you were taking cover behind.:D

AND ME2 still managed to have an engaging story despite the shooter tweaks.  The way decisions carry over from the first game is truly amazing.

But DAO is a truer rpg experience and let's be honest: it shines on the pc where it can be modded to no end.  The mods are what really make the game great.

Different is good. Variety is the spice of life.

Where they do not differ is in the stamp of Bioware quality.  Both are fine gaming offerings.

DAO is miles ahead of ME1. Hell, I don't even remember what happened in ME1, I even deleted my save lol. Which is sad because I just got my copy of ME2 today. :D

Waiting for the extra content to download so I can play.. woohoo...

Are you playing pc version of ME2?  If so go here to get some high level character saves from the first game to use on ME2 for perks and desired story: http://www.annakie.com/me/

So which do yall like better imo i think DAO is 100 times better than Mass effect, i cant stand playin mass effect  its so boring , you can do more in DAO anyways ,i played threw DAO 3 times without gettin tired of it and played mass effect 1 half way and 2 all the way once and was done with em , i think they should work more on DAO instead of mass effect. DAO!

they're completely different games. comparing is hard to do. i prefer dragon age, but that's my genre of choice. i like fantasy rpgs. i'm not into anything sci fi. that said, mass effect seems to have that usual bioware quality, so i'm sure it is a great game for those who like action sci fi games.

Mass Effect was a good shooter/RPG, Mass Effect 2 is a good shooter. DA:O is the best western RPG created since Baldur's Gate. While i do like the Mass Effect series, it doesn't even come close to DA:O in basically every aspect, and expecially in depth, story and characters.

What ME2 did well were the loyalty missions, but even those were little more than fairly flashed out "go to point A to point B shooting everything that moves" missions with a lil story on the side.

I did like how a couple of them were entirely RPed without any fighting at all.  That was pretty unique from a Mass Effect perspective.  But yeah most of them were 'go meet interesting people and shoot them'.

Not that there is anything wrong with that!

I prefer DA:O. I really liked ME1, but some of the changes to ME2 just don't sit well with me. Imagine if your mage's spells all shared the same timer? So if you cast fireball you couldn't cast another spell due to a shared timer for all your spells? That's what they did for ME2 and all your character powers.

ME2 character models are better than DA:O and I like that the player character has a voice in the cut scenes. But I doubt I'll be replaying it like I did ME1 and DA:O.

Mass Effect 2 has very little replay incentive, that, and the insensitivity of your party members and lack of any meaningful dialogue could make it's popularity short lived.

.

you have got to be kidding....Mass Effect  2 has quadrouple the replay value of Dragon Age...and triple the amount of content and meaningful relationships and dialog.  Mass Effect 2 has so many different outcomes that i feel compelled to play again...i couldnt bring myself to finish my second round of Dragon Age to have a different save

Yes, yes, keep dreaming... :innocent:
Mass Effect is a good game, but it's much shorter, and much more shallow than Dragon Age.

That is a matter of opinion.  I have already played through DA three times and I will probably play through it at least once more.

However ME2 I will probably play through twice.  Once as a female and once as a male.

I haven't played Mass effect 2 yet, but one advantage that Dragon Age has over ME 1 is that little of the content seems repetitive. In mass effect 1 all the side quests were basically identical. 1) land on planet. 2) drive to spot. 3) enter station 4) pick up items from entryway containers. 5) shoot some bad guys in a room. 6) pick up items in a side room from containers. 7) run out to Mako. Almost none of the side quests really had much character or content. In Dragon Age, they typically do. That said, I really like both games.

Comparing DAO and ME is a bit of a mute argument, they are completely different genres which will apeal to comletely different schools of rpg players. I personaly am a big fan of both genres and love both the games equaly I would be unable to pick between them.the only thing I would say is that I wish you could map more than 1 ability to your quick battle options in ME on the console version as you can in DAO also, ME has the annoying trait of not saving the game for you just before crucial plot developments which will sometimes result in your death as dragon age does !!

The problem with the planet hoping was that it was far from useless and very beneficial so you always felt compelled to do it.

Now we have planet scanning which is pretty brutal also but fortunately you will probably do alot less of it.

I was talking to a friend of mine, and he tells me that ME universe is the same as DAO's. Time period is off though for both, anyway. I'd say its a draw, but DAO could be more pose for greatness coz of the mod community in the pc. Ah the endless mods.

I love these exchanges between the Mass Effect camp and the Dragon age camp, its such good fun.

Maybe we should have a war.  Us with our swords, bows and magic spells against you lot with your laser beams and bionic thingamajigs. :P

Actually magic and biotic powers are really the same, but in different platforms. sword and guns have the same similar philosophy, different ranges though.

After playing both games and beating them 3 time for Dragon Age: Origins 2 times working on 3 For Mass Effect 2. I would have to say I like Mass Effect 1-2 more, but that could be because I am a big Si Fi fan.

I did like Dragon Age: Origins it was a great RPG, I just didn't like it as much as Mass Effect 1-2.
