I am on my second play through of this awesome game. I played the first time through with no issues at all. Shortly after starting my second time through I installed Warden's Keep. Ever since then the game stutters during the cut scenes and stops in the middle of play. When I say stuttering I mean that the game freezes for 5 or 6 seconds then plays for 20 seconds then freezes again.

I have scoured this forum and others and have tried all of the suggestions posted from tweaking my video setting, shutting off Vista effects, shutting down Norton, installing older NVIDIA drivers . . . nothing works. Even at the lowest graphic settings I have the same issue. It plays fine for 5 or 10 minutes then the stuttering gets so bad that I have to exit the game. I start again and the same thing repeats- fine for 5-10 then terrible stuttering.

Has anyone discovered a solution to this? It's the only black mark on what is otherwise the best RPG I've played in a very long time.

I had a huge overheating issue with my 8800gt. Was fine on my first play through and as I played the game more and more it really did a number on my video card. I had to download the Riva Tuner to up the fan speed on the card. I guess NVIDIA has it defaulted at like 30% speed. I upped mine to 50%.

I love this game, don't get my wrong...but it certainly pushes even some higher end PCs for whatever reason, even though it shouldn't. From what I have read, mostly over heating issues.

I have the 8800 GTS too but the temp is never above 65 from what I can tell. Did you have the same issues with stuttering and stopage? Not sure why it would put more stress on the card the second time through. But I will give it a try, thanks.

I would get lag/stutters, but eventually my video card would just crash altogether. Cleaned it out as much as I could and it was fine for a week or so and then it started happening again. Used the RivaTuner to up the fan speed which worked well for 3-4 weeks and then, boom...again, video card overheats and crashes. So I ended up upgrading my video card to a Radeon which hasn't given me any issues for the past 2 weeks. It could have been just that my card was over worked in general. In the 2-3 years I've had it, it's been through constant gaming with WoW, AoC, WAR and some other RPGs. I guess it was just time for a replacement.

No love. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be an issue with the video card. Played with fan at 100% and started stuttering after 10 minutes of play. Someone on another forum said that it sounds like a memory link since it began when I installed Warden't Keep. Too bad. This was a great game and I would have loved to play it through a couple more times.

I recently bought an ATI Radeon HD 4890 and when I played Dragon Age: Origins for the first time, it worked fine. But now I made a new character and now I would play for like... 10-30 minutes and my pc would lock up (freeze) and I would have to reset my pc. I have the latest CCC, and I have recently updated DAO and it is still happening, I have searched google and i keep getting links to drivers, which i download and update. I have no idea what to do.

EDIT: My Graphics Card is DEFINITLEY not overheating, when I play modern warfare 2 (on max graphics) my card gets to about 59*C no more. When I play DAO I boost my fan to 50-60%

Roll back to an older video driver. Run a Microsoft Clean Boot diagnostics procedure the way they show in their tutorial for your Windows version.

This the link to the one for Windows XP, but Vista has a separate tutorial, and for all I know, so does Windows 7.

Whatever video driver ends up working without stuttering. It is often relatively individual, because of different background software programs and services (after you get rid of the unnecessary ones).

My wife an I are having a very similar problem.

My PC:
Xeon 3110 OC'd to 3.6 gig
4 gig of Corsair XMS2
Windows 7 64 (fresh install)
NVidia 470GTX (latest drivers)
DAO 1.04 patch + Awakenings + DLC (NO MODS)

According to my OSD, I am running DAO at a constant 60fps, my GPU temps never exceed 70 degrees.
Every once in a while, my screen will freeze for 1-5 seconds then resume. This is totally random, it might happen once an hour or twice within 5 minutes. It can happen in combat, conversation or cut scene.

This is the only game I have issues with.

My Wife's PC.
Asus G72 laptop
Intel 2.53 gig
6 gig of ram
Windows 7 64
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
DAO 1.04 patch + awakenings + DLC (SOME MODS)

Tho she does not get screen freezes, at random times she will get single frame rendering which will then resume to normal.

Both of these PC's have played thru DAO more than once under previous patches with no issues.

These problems are not game breakers, but very annoying.

Update.. Downloaded EVGA precision to determine the laptop's GPU temp and usage.
I discovered that when this problem occurs, the GPU temp actually decreases AND the GPU usage drops to almost 0%.

The locations are NOT random for her laptop. Meeting "dog" on the way to Lothering, the 2nd conversation witih the bandit leader on the bridge to Lothering, always produced the massive FPS loss. Right after, the game returned to normal, the GPU temp increased to 70+ and the GPU usage increased to the 70-80 range.

This is a laptop that has played thru DAO, ME, ME2, and Jade Empire multiple times. It has handled any and all games my wife has tossed at it.

I am truly stumped as to the cause.

I need help with as well. I got an Gigabyte GTX 470 with latest nvidia driver and I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I finished the game on windows xp with no freezing now I get it maybe 3 times in 5 minutes sometimes 1 in 4 hrs in windows 7. I have updated everything I could to stop this problem. I disabled vertical sync and frame buffering and its better but still occurs. On the same card on windows xp it ran perfectly no freezing, stuttering or anything. I use patch 1.02a. I have not installed any dlc. Any suggestions on what is causing this? It is ruining the game for me now.

Have you installed patch 1.04? This patch is supposed to alleviate some of the compatibility bugs and slowdowns.

Hi. No I stopped at 1.02a because I never bought Awakening and worried about the issues I read the last two patches cause. If I have to install 1.03 then 1.04 I will buy Awakening and hope for the best. I thought maybe it was a disc issue but the new disc does the same thing so now I have two copies of Dragon Age: Origins.

I have Mass Effect 2 on pc and it runs perfectly fine on max settings so its not my pc.

ME2 is a totally different engine, so the comparison means nothing really. If you have issues you really do need to install the most recent patch before complaining about them, too, albeit I see your reasoning.

I seem to have stopped most of the freezing now. Occurring a lot less now. It now only does it sometimes just before combat even though I took pause off. Will the most recent patch affect female characters? If not I try it out. I read somewhere that male characters are fine. I have to buy Mass Effect 1 again so I get Awakening at the same time and see what happens. Maybe it solves the problem. This freezing is the only issue I have - I get no crashing or anything else.

Description: Describe your technical problem as best as you can
I
have some freezing issues in the game mostly when blood mages or
darkspawn mages cast spells. There are a couple when just walking in
Denerim near a quest area.

" Problem Details

a. When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions. Who? What? When? Where?
In
Shale's personal quest freezing was very bad, sometimes Denerim,
Abandoned building where the blood mages are. Orzzamar. These are the
worst.

b. What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?

Freezing for sometimes a couple of seconds sometimes 10 seconds.

c. When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?

Nearly every time I battle a mage.

d. Where? Where does the problem occur?

No particular place. Could be anywhere.

e. Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

I
can get it when attacking the mage and he uses a fireball spell on me
and any high level spell. Sometimes I get it when going near a area
needed for a quest.

Can anyone help with this error? I been phoning EA Support for a week solid now and now got told I must contact the developers. The problem is definitely with magic. I can tell when a freeze will occur. Something in the sound is not right and it is certain spells that keep doing it.  Besides two odd freezes in Denerim and I don't get freezes outside of blood magic spells and fireball. These two almost always causes freezing. Very annoying especially when I had to kill the blood mages in the abandoned building. I have posted my specs avbove. I reinstalled all c++ runtime libraries and although better it still occurs.:(

I too did the first playthrough without any problems, but when I downloaded the DLCs the short freezes began. I did different things, and then suddenly it worked fine... As such I can't isolate the solution for certain but I actually think the simple solution was to turn off the automatic login that you probably enabled when you downloaded Warden's Keep... This certainly got rid of the freezes for me:-)
