While shapeshifting is neat, it seems far less useful any any other group of sells. The forms I've played with (spider and bear) don't do useful damage and you can't tank with them. Only the 'web' ability is any good.
Alternatively, leaving Morrigan in her human form gives you a wide range of damage dealing, buffing, and debuffing options.
What is shapeshifting good for?

Perhaps it improves once you get the upgraded forms.

Let me know too if you find out.
So far I have used bear form a bit to distract monsters, but as you wrote it's not very damaging and Morrigan needs to call for a medic if anything pays serious attention to her. The only time it was useful to me so far was during the Redcliffe "zombie" invasion. Sten being the only warrior in my group, I turned her into a bear to tank and it worked reasonably well until she was swarmed. I wonder if pairing it with Arcane Warrior helps...

I got the mastery talent, and she's a bit more durable, but it still feels like a waste. If I were going for an all mage party, it might be a bit more useful, but as-is, she's definately more powerful in human form.

I'd much rather go Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage...Thats about as powerful as a mage can get in my honest opinion.

The mastery spell improves the form, but they do not tank well. The Flying swarm deals AoE damage when you turn into it, so maybe that is useful for a moment but so far I use it to finish off mobs.

arcane warrior does more damage and tanks well too...

Shapeshifting is only good if you ran out of mana, or if you got trapped in a tough spot with a bunch of mobs beating on you. Then, you go bear form, and tear some stuff up.
Personally, I think the cooldown timers on shapeshifting are too long to make it very useful, and think that Arcane Warriors do much more damage.

Not to mention that Arcane warriors wear heavy armor..plus the buffs......you do quite alot of damage..and are fairly hard to kill...not to mention the shield that an Arcane warrior has just in case.

On a slightly unrelated note: there's a lot of people wearing the blood dragon armour in their avatars.
Shame I rolled a Rogue on my first run through, Sten is wearing mine.

This avatar is my mage lol...Arcane Warrior all the way...might switch to Juggernaut..or Legion of the Dead eventually just to be different though.

Eh, shapshifting is fun. More useful when Morrigan has few spells at the start of the game. Latter on you can use it to protect her from melee with the swarm. Its limited in use but I find it fun. Its much more useful on normal. On hard I'd want Blood Mage or Spirit mage/Arcane Warrior.

It is not. Might be if you spec high str/con and forget about mage stuff but not sure.

I find the bear from is useful as a secondary tank, or tertiary in the case of my current party (Alistair, Oghren, Wynne and my mage). Having Wynne there to heal me up makes up for not being able to use items.
More importantly, I think its fun! It may be true there are better builds, that Arcane warriors get armour, blood mages get...whatever they get, and the shapeshifting forms are under powered; for me, nothing beats the idea of my squishy mage turning into a bear and ripping the face off some poor, poor genlock !

I haven't maxed my shapeshifting line yet but it seems like getting mastery of it would make it a fair bit more viable, so far the spider and bear forms are really only useful as a means to finish off a fight when you're low on mana however with the mastery and their buffed stats and the overwhelm ability they get I could see it being a lot more useful. We'll see I guess but I think the real reason shapeshifting is under powered is that you can't get the golem form from the sloth demon's realm, that form was epic!

Keep in mind that when in shapeshifted form, your magic attribute determines the strength of the form.

For now, I only use Morrigan's shapeshifting when she's low on mana, and I haven't taken any additional forms beyond the spider. I doubt I will.

FYI I pumped a full lvl into str and my spider form damage went from 10.6 to 13.3...reloaded and pumped magic stat...spider damage remained the same. As far as I can tell magic simply does nothing for spider form. Or its behind the scenes.....

I've taken Shapeshifting (SS) up to mastery. While there are many more effective builds you can use I will say that Shapeshifting at mastery is fun and effective.
The spider and bear form get tougher and provide access to Overpower, which is a very nice skill to have.
The bug form is very cool for evading missle fire and at mastery level provides a means to get your health pumped back up while doing some decent damage.
Having the most uber build can be entertaining, but trying less optimal stuff really can be fun if you like the challenge of figuring out how to best use it.

I liked shapeshifting more than I thought I would. The forms were powerful enough to do damage in a fight and didn't die quickly. I used it in different ways depending on my party make up. If she was the one mage she would shift when mana was low or when others were taking too much damage. In my double or triple mage party she'd just kicked butt and often drew fire.
I actually had trouble with arcane warrior, my casting time changed and often left me in a lurch (figured out it was the weapon in my way) and I liked the bonuses my robes gave me (also, strangely, I didn't want my mage looking like everyone else).

Shapeshifting is pretty worthless... but there is a mod that let's you take different (and more powerful) forms. I'm looking forward to trying it.

As long as you use the mod that makes shapeshifting instant, then yes, shapeshifting is useful. Otherwise, it's pretty useless.
