Is anyone using a controller for the PC version of ME2?  If so, how's it working?  Which controller? How did the setup work?  I'm thinking of trying out a controller, since I miss that kind of control the 360 has.

I played ME1 on the 360, and I'm unable to for ME2. For one thing, movement is so much more fluid and intuitive with a controller. That's the big thing.

I used Xpadder for playing ME1 on my PC because ME1 didn't support controllers.  Xpadder lets you emulate keyboard/mouse with a controller though.  Takes a little bit to figure out but Xpadder works really well. Set
left thumbstick to WASD and right thumbstick to Mouse up down left right..

I used a wired 360 controller since they're cheap and work on both PC and 360, but a wireless 360 controller with the PC transmitter or just some PC game controller works.

Elios, have you made custom key bindings? Like Telecaster55 I also find it quite difficult to play the game with the mouse/keyboard, it really feels like I should be using a controller. It's the first time I've played an action type game on the PC so I'm probably just not used to it but I thought mabye just the default position of the key bindings was off. I just cannot seem to get a smooth flow of run to cover/duck out shoot/ take cover/put on cloak(or whatever) storm out shoot/cover etc. I always seem to be fumbling for the correct key and lose momentum. I don't think we can use a controller on the PC, but I'd be interested in how more experienced PC gamers set up the keyboard/mouse to get the most out of the game. Any advice appreciated.

Why I prefer playing PC games with a controller: With a controller I'm looking at the screen and playing the game. With KB+M, consantly looking at the KB seriously detracts from the experience. Frequent pauses in gameplay to reference a multitude of key bindings should be considered taboo in the "entertainment" industry. For some reason a sizable share of PC game developers think we prefer looking at our keyboards instead of playing the game. They think it's "better". I hate purists. And in large part, they are wrong.

Keep it simple: keep it fun...make PC games work with gamepads, with KB+M considered legacy, not the other way around.

Anyone playing ME2 on PC likely has enough $$ tied into their machine an added $25-50 bucks for a gamepad is a non-issue, probably welcome expenditure.

I use a logitech cordless rumblepad 2. 1 hour into this game the tediusness of fumbling with a KB+M on the sofa is wearing thin. I use Pinnacle Profiler for emulation (logitech software not as full featured). Being basically FPS based keybindings in ME2, my next step is to start with my Crysis controller profile and tailor it for this game. I've thought a about buying a MS XBOX for Windows controller, but since so few games actually support it, I think for the time being I'm better off staying with a direct input (KB+M) emulated gamepad.

I don't think it's an either/or situation, if the controls are already overloaded, then split the difference. Have the gamepad or joystick handle the movement and combat controls, let the mouse handle the mass effect conversations and put the other stuff on the keyboard. Sometimes in "Arkham Asylum" I'd feel more comfortable letting the mouse handle the camera and batarangs while I'd use the Xbox controller for everything else, it didn't feel inconvenient at all. It made the gameplay seem versatile. I guess everyone experiences their games differently.

For those of you using those Xpadder type deals, does the keyboard get cut off from you when you reformat it?

Or is it still responsive along with your gamepad? Can you jump back and forth between them?

only thing i changed is Pause is now my side mouse
game plays great and i can aim FAR better with mouse then you ever could with a game pad
and i can change the DPI on my mouse on the fly its H@X snipping lol
whats wrong with WASD? hell even squad control is better Q and E and WAY year then reaching for the D-pad
what i meant by over loaded was that say spacebar does more then one thing by context
on 360 more things are overloaded like that like Say reload
type yellow for reload hold for weapon swap were i just hit X

and i DO have a game pad i just for Racing games and a few Jprgs that are on PC thats about it

and any one looking at there keyboard L2Play same as a game pad just map your controls better i never have to look at my keyboard hell some of the letters are even worn off and i dont need to see them to type l2touchtype

I know and sometimes if you let the gamepad share some of the same functions, you don't have to use the spacebar(or whatever) for 3 or 4 different things and vice-versa with the pad. You might use the spacebar for one thing and the pad for another. Again, that depends on whether you mind moving back and forth between them in-game. I don't. (Well, at least with some games.)

Took all night, but I finally finished the game profile for use with PS3/Xbox style controllers. I use Pinnacle Profiler (similar functionality to xpadder, it's a kb+m emulator). If anyone's interested my next stop is to post my profile creation in Pinnacle's forum share area.

I played about 15 minutes with KB+M and it was driving me nuts. With a gamepad--it's FUN!

FYI I programmed my profile to TOGGLE commands for Aim (like Crysis), Hud, and Objective Map (I can turn the map on and it stays onscreen like most FPS games, unless I turn it off).

Quickslots are the only sticky part, they're accessed in the controller's shifted state, or by pulling up the HUD. Quick slots 1-4 are easy access for favorites..Slots 5-8 probably cumbersome better via the HUD.

Being a couch potato/HTPC setup I insist on game pad use whenever humanly feasable.

Only recent game I do not play with a pad is DragonAge...I would be interested to see how they accomplished playablilty on the console versions of DAO. Different design UI? ...or like the PC version were battles more pause than action?

I can understand the want for a controller because some parts of the game scream that it was designed for an analog controller.

Look at planet scanning: Do you think it is an optimal use of a mouse to require you to keep it in constant motion for planet rotation? It would have been much better if that was in WASD. Same for moving your ship on the galaxy map.

You can't use double click to confirm. You can't use scroll with the mousewheel.

You get the idea. :)

Hopefully ME3 has proper PC control optimisation and/or controller support is thrown in.

I got a Saitek Cyborg v.3 Rumble controller, and it works fine except the right joystick (which corresponds to the mouse) moves to quickly, making aiming very hard. I've tried changing the camera sensitivity, but that doesn't help. The manufacturer diag window doesn't have a way to change the sensitivity. Changing the mouse sensitivity outside the game affects my movement of the actual mouse functions, but not the aiming/turning/looking function in game. Suggestions?

I use a mouse _and_ the left side buttons of a programmable Logitech gamepad (instead of keyboard) It's really intuitive as far as the button placement.

I still don't understand why people feel the need to rag on somebody's preferred method of game play. Who Cares? I buy a game to play it for fun; the way I want to play it. I am using a logitech dual action game pad with 10 of the 12 buttons mapped and 3 hat positions mapped. Like said earlier I am having much more fun watching the screen and not watching the keyboard.

I have the D-pad (hat switches, i guess you call them) mapped to squad orders ...

the 9 and 10 middle buttons work great for pause(HUD) and map

How do you have things laid out?

Did you change the sensitivity in the .ini file?

Here's a how-to from the forums:

Mouse Sensitivity Issues :

The
mouse sensitivity by default seems to be set very high, with no way to
turn it down in game. The steps below should help you fix the problem.

First you'll need to download and install Notepad++ (found here  ( Click on : Download Notepad++ executable files ) ) Without that program, you'll only mess up your .ini files, which will result in the game no longer starting.

After
the default installation of Notepad ++, find your Coalesced.ini file at
the location :

(NOTE : Make a BACKUP of that file in case you screw it
up!!!!!)

C:-->Program Files-->Mass Effect 2-->BioGame-->Config-->PC-->Cooked
  • C: -> games -> Mass effect 2 on vista and win7)
Right
click, and open with Notepad++  (if you don't see this context menu
option, then simply open up Notepad++ manually from your start menu,
and point to the file you would like to open).

Using the top
menu bar you can go to Search, and then Find  (or simply press
Ctrl+F anywhere in the document) to open up the search window. In the
box next to "Find what :" paste in  : MouseSensitivity

Press enter, and change the value to something like 0.4

Save
the file, and try to start your game. If your game starts up, then you
can simply edit that value until it suits your needs. If you game's
.exe crashes, then you either were not editing it with the correct
program, or changed the value of something that you were not supposed
to. If that is the case, delete the bad file, and replace it with your
clean backup copy.

Thanks for the suggestions in this thread, guys! I spent all week finding a copy of the ME2 Collector's for my new PC, bought a wired 360 controller, and almost cried when I found out the game didn't support it.

While I prefer the keyboard and mouse, my bf wants to use a controller. I have all the keys mapped except for the right stick. I am using Logitech's Profiler and I followed HDRoadking's settings but don't quite understand how to set up the right stick. Could someone tell me how to map that part?

Thank you all for your comments!
